KARL EITEL SURPRISES » .Coughlin Star Easily Outruns Brown Wisdom and Silverdale. » Marcasite Scores Lucky Victory Over Proteus — Dark Sea Wins Fourth Straight Purse. ♦ HOMEWOOD, 111., June 18.— Karl Eitel, owned by Alderman J. J. Coughlin of Chicago, and racing coupled with Basilica, paid the surprisingly long odds of 2.74 when he won the allowance race which featured this afternoons program at Washington Park. The winner, which showed in his first start of the year that he was in top notch condition, was always close to the pace set by Brown Wisdom and, taking a «hort lead when the latter began to tire in the stretch, led to the end. Pigeon Hole, finishing fast on the inside, got up in time to take second money from Brown Wisdom, while Snowflake, recently arrived from New York, was a fast finishing fourth. Silverdale, which on his first appearance at Washington Park finished outside the money, was the medium of quite a plunge, but his connections failed to win with him. He was pocketed early and jockey McCoy could not get him clear until his reserve speed had been sapped. Brown Wisdom set the pace, with Karl Eitel close up, and they raced in that order to the stretch, where the Coughlin horse took command. Pigeon Hole, making his first start since the Agua Caliente Handicap, displayed a creditable effort despite interference and was going fast at the finish. The race was over seven furlongs, and jockey F. Halbert was on the winner. EXTREMELY WARM WEATHER. The warmest weather of the season prevailed this afternoon, but the majority of the fine crowd of fans in attendance forgot the humidity in the excitement of the contests. The track was fast and the skies cloudless. Casimira, representing the Middleburg Stable of Mrs. W. Ziegler, Jr., graduated from the maiden class when she won the first race. Although slightly outrun early, she had enough speed to keep within striking distance of the early leaders and, wearing them down in the stretch, won slowly drawing away. Elkhart was second, and Prince Herbert finished third. Both Chilly Gal and Call to Arms, outsiders, showed much early speed but tired in the stretch, While Bottled Bourbon raced greenly. Casimira was the favorite. Silver Lake, which graduated from the maiden ranks in his last start at this meeting, led from start to finish to win the second race. Jockey C. E. Allen, after hustling him into the lead, gave him a breathing spell, and he easily withstood the stretch challenges of Baggage Maid and .Yucatan. The latter, an outsider, nosed out the favorite, Baggage Alaid, for second place. Another big field went to the post. LUCKY TRIUMPH. The Middleburg Stable won its second purse of the day when Marcasite finished first in the third race. She scored a lucky victory as Proteus and Suns Son, fighting for the leadership in the stretch, were so intent on taking care of each other that they permitted Marcasite to race next to the rail and get the lead near the end. Proteus, the well backed favorite, which set most of the pace, finished second and Prince Hotspur third. Suns Son quit badly near the end, while Adobe Post, which also had a large following, again disappointed and was never dangerous. Jockey C. Corbett was on the winner, and it was his second success of the day. The improved Dark Sea, whose owner dared run him for ,500 at Churchill Downs, scored his fourth straight when he moved up in class to beat a band of ,000 racers in the fourth race. Rated behind Royal Ruffin in the early stages, he caught the latter when urged in the stretch, and drew out to win by over a length. Nostaw, which on several appearances here has met with poor racing luck, was again the victom of circumstances, being blocked repeatedly, and did well to finish second, while Royal Ruf-andA lasted to be third.
