BOZO BAINBRIDGE WINNER • Earns First Purse of Meeting for Missouri Stable. — t ■ i ■ ■ Scala Furnishes Surprise by Beating Band in Sixth Race— Magna Mater Juvenile Race Winner. • CLEVELAND, Ohio, June 23. — Bozo scored the first victory of the Bainbridge Park meeting for the Missouri Stable, owned by R. F. Coppage, when he led throughout in the fifth race, which attracted a small but the most select field of the afternoon. Sunday Clothes raced in closest pursuit of the winner to the turn for home where Pur-lie moved up. All through the last furlong Bozo was doing his best to stall off Purlie, and eventually scored by a neck. Purlie was an easy second. Jack Berry dropped into third place unopposed in the stretch when Sunday Clothes quit. The races were staged over a fast track, but rain threatened. The attendance was of the usual week-day proportions, and the finishes close, arousing keen enthusiasm. The apprentice jockey R. Montgomery was in the limelight, piloting two winners. Somewhat of a surprise developed when Scala was winner of the sixth race, carrying the colors of A. Bordeaux to victory. Scala wrested the lead from Princess Zelda, the pacemaker, a sixteenth out, but was hard pressed to score by a head from the fast finishing Tangram. Princess Zelda tired rapidly near the end, barely saving third from Princess Dare. Bright Flash ran well to the stretch, but tired in the final furlong. After fighting for the leadership closely lapped with Tollie Young until midway in the stretch in the initial race, Smoldering had enough in reserve to withstand a determined challenge from Light o Dawn in the final stages. Light o Dawn finished so strongly that Smolderings margin of victory was only a head. Tollie Young lasted to save third from Golden Orient, which, well backed, raced close up most of the distance. War Nymph and Patsy H. raced closely lapped slightly in advance of the others to the stretch in the second. At this point Shasta Lad moved up between the leaders, while Shorty challenged on the outside. Shasta Lad forged to the front a furlong out and drew away into a clear lead in the final stages. Shorty secured the second portion of the purse with much to spare, War Nymph tiring. Magna Mater was closely pressed by Dominant Star until the stretch was reached in the third race, but drew away into a handy lcvd a furlong out and was never threatened thereafter. Let Her Play was never far from the leaders and in the final drive she outlasted Mary Bane for second, after the latter had raced on the outside most of the distance. Parties raced on the inside, saving ground, but was never a troublesome factor, racing below expectations.
