TRIUMPH FOR BRADLEY « Bathorse Scores in Union Claiming Stakes at Aqueduct. ♦ Pnly Three Starters Finish Steeplechase, With Greentree Stables Erne II. Victorious. ♦ ■ ■ NEW YORK, N. Y., June 23.— Bathorse carried the Edward R. Bradley silks to a well earned victory in the Union Claiming Stakes at Aqueduct today. He added ,100 Jo his earnings by his victory, and his advantage at the end was only a matter of inches over Follow On, from the Sagamore Stable, with W. R. Coes Masked Ball beating the Rancocas Stables Mowris for third. Jlain Monday night and early this morning did not have much effect on the footine, and the track was rated as good, rather than slow. Threatening weather kept many away, and the crowd was well below the average in numbers. From a promised field of fourteen in the Union Claiming Stakes there were five withdrawals, and the nine running furnished a rare thrill, with the result in doubt to the Jast stride. Sergt. Donaldson and Follow On were the ones to set the pace, and they made it fast. Racing well lapped, it was Sergt. Donaldson that tired, but he had kept Follow On exceedingly busy before he gave up in the stretch, and that probably brought about the defeat of the Sagamore Stable gelding. MOWRIS KNOCKED BACK. Mowris was knocked back badly leaving the back stretch, and it was some excuse for his showing, but the others did not seem to have any like alibi. Masked Ball raced into the contention when the stretch was reached, but Knapp was of no assistance, and she was racing on her own courage and rapidly forging to the front when Cannon Charged along on the outside with Bathorse and in the final strides dropped his nose in front. Follow On had beaten the Coe filly by a length for second place. After his early misfortune Mowris ran an excellent race to close a big gap and be a fast going fourth at the end. It was a good band of juvenile fillies that raced in the fifth and Red Sky, from the Audley Farm Stable, proved best when she scored over the Rancocas Stables Defier, with Joseph E. Wideners Dr. Syntax just saving third from Towee, which raced for the Sagamore Stable. The start was a good one and Tommy Mc-Taggart got away fast with Portam, but he was soon joined by Red Sky, while Defier moved into third place and the three of them were well before Dr. Syntax. Then in the final furlong Red Sky drew away rather handily to be the winner by something more than a length. Defier, hanging on well, held Dr. Syntax perfectly safe for second place, while Towee was coming with a rush that would have seen him third in a few more strides. DEDUCE GRADUATES. Deduce, from the Rancocas Stable, graduated from the maiden class in the opening five furlongs dash, for two-year-old non-winners. Whisking, from the Newtondale Stable, finished second, and third fell to Mrs. Robert H. Heigles Polobar. The first and second in this race had outside stalls at the start and that is considered the least desirable positions in a big field racing through the stretch course at Aqueduct, for the reason there is an elbow to the course. But both Deduce and Whisking had speed enough to offset that disadvantage and they crossed without interfering with the rights of the other runners. At the end Deduce was going away to win by two lengths, and Whisking beat Polobar a length and a half for second place. Three lengths away came Herkimer, the starter from the Quincy Stable. Of the seven that went to the post for the short course steeplechase only three finished, with Erne II., from the Greentree Stable, an easy winner over Mrs. Grace Dennys Le Bey and Mrs. R. H. Crawfords Top Kick finishing a distant third. Both Dark Magne and Iollan fell at the last fence, while Capstone unseated his rider two jumps from home. Coq Gris unseated Thorndike at the seventh jump. Erne II., racing in his best form, forced most of the pace, while Le Bey, beginning slowly, was rated along by Bellhouse, though he moved into second place before the water was reached. There he made a bad landing and lost some ground, with Erne II. again Continued on seventeenth page. TRIUMPH FOR BRADLEY Continued from first page. drawing away into a safe lead. Iollan was going well back of the winner and Dark Magne was also closely following the pace and racing stride for stride with Le Bey. In the last half mile Bellhouse drove Le Bey hard in an effort to catch Erne II., but it was of no avail and when he made another bad landing both Dark Magne and Iollan were right with him until they both came down at the last jump. In the short run home Erne II. held his advantage readily to be the winner by ten lengths. Top Kick was third because of the other falls, for he was thirty lengths back of Mrs. Dennys French jumper. There was an unfortunate accident after the running of the steeplechase when Iollan, while running loose, struck John Young, who was in the field to watch the running. He was knocked down and trampled to such an extent that he was rushed to the hospital for an examination and treatment. The riders had all escaped injury in their falls and each walked from the field. The first of the two six and a half furlong races for the platers was run as the fourth and it produced a good contest when On-cora, from the Black and White Stable, just beat Blue Day, from the Newtondale Stable, with Squeeze Play, from the Brandon Stable, beating Mrs. Thomas R. Queens Angry Plume for third. Trainer H. J. Thompson canceled the E. R. Bradley stall reservations at Arlington Park. Illness visited the stable and he will move to Saratoga. Mrs. Anna Nelson claimed Bubsy C. out of the last race yesterday for ,700. Trainer Stotler reports that C. H. Pierces The Heathen has gone amiss and will be on the shelf for some time.
