R. GALLET SILKS IN FRONT Lieut. Russell Defeats Small Band in Kenilworth Headliner — Weather Ideal. WINDSOR, Ont., June 29.— The stable of R. Gallet, which is campaigning at Windsor for the first time, accounted for the best race on the program at Kenilworth today when Lieut. Russell scored in the fifth. This attracted a field of four. The Seagram Stables Chatty finished second and Wellet, the choice, racing in the silks of W. L. Brodie, headed the only other starter, Butter John. Butter John delayed the start three minutes and was eliminated when he failed to begin with the others. Until passing the half mile post it was Wellet that was showing the way, while Lieut. Russell was at his saddle girths, well in advance of Chatty. On the far turn Lyons sent the Gallet five-year-old into the lead, while McGinnis matched this move and Chatty also began moving up. Lyons had a two-lengths advantage over his nearest pursuer midway on the turn, and Chatty was going stride for stride with Wellet. When the stretch was reached the Seagram colt had shaken off the favorite and set sail for the leader. At the sixteenth post it appeared that Chatty would overtake Lieut. Russell, but Lyons put up an exceptionally strong finish and managed to save the day by a neck, while the Seagram three-year-old was a length and a half to the good of Wellet. The Monday program at Kenilworth was witnessed by one of the slimmest crowds that has ever attended the border citys course. Weather conditions were ideal for the sport and the track was again fast. Mrs. H. E. Thomas* Grey Lock, ridden by H. Thibodeaux, accounted for the opening five furlongs race, which attracted an even dozen juvenile platers under claiming con- Continued on twenty-third page. The winner was grouped in the field with Sporting Maudie and Chief Reyer. In the stretch Jaipur was in front and it was not until the last seventy yards that Grey Lock ranged alongside to draw away into a half length lead by the time the finish line was reached.
