BROWN WISDOM LUCKK " i Careless Ride By Malley Costs Va$ der Pool Purse. , Sunny Isle Purse Feature of Off Day Card at Hialeah Park Big Crowd Attends. 5 MIAMI, Fla., Feb. 2. It was only becaus$ of the gross carelessness of Tommy Malley that William M. Moores Vander Pool wa beaten by W. C. and E. W. Reicherts Brown Wisdom in the Sunny Isle Purse at Hialeah Park this afternoon. It was a six furlongs race, and Malley, who rode Vander Pool, was caught napping at the end by C. E. Al-len on Brown Wisdom, and the Chicago geldi ing earned the decision. With the exception of the Sunny Isle Purse, the racing was given over to cheap ones, but good sport resulted, and it wag unfortunate that the best race should have been marred by a careless ride that savr the best horse second instead of the winner. Another big crowd attended, and there was a continued improvement in the volume of speculation throughout the afternoon. In the Sunny Isle Purse Claremont, after causing a delay at the post, was last away, but was in motion and after a few strides he was showing the way, with French Las3 at his throat latch, while Vander Pool followed the mare closely. Brown Wisdom began well, but could not keep step with the early pace, and Judge Schilling was showing him the way. CLAREMONT TIRES. When Malley had Vander Pool in full stride, he took hold of him slightly and was content to send him along within striking distance of the leaders. Claremont soon tired of setting the pace, but French Lass carried on and Vander Pool moved up at the head of the stretch. The mare fought along gamely but Vander Pool was holding her perfectly safe and Malley seemed to have an idea there was ndthing else back of her. t When he had the mare beaten, he did not persevere with the son of Campfire and all the time Allen was bringing up Brown Wisdom with a rush on the outside. Malley could not have seen this menace for he made no effort to rouse his mount and in the last few strides, the son of Brown Prince II. raced past to be the winner by a neck. French Lass was at the heels of the first two, and a length arid a half before Judge Schilling. Only five went to the post for the opening seven furlongs dash, and the winner turned up in Mrs. A. Carfanos General A. He led from end to end to score over J. H. Johnsons Felaxe, which in turn beat A. C. Jones Inferno Lad handily for the place. Big Business and Castle Rock, the only other start ers, were always outrun. j NEEDED THE RACE. 1 General A. was pursued by Inferno Lad to the head of the stretch, but the latter evidently needed the race and, as he weakened, Mills closed with Felaxe. As he made his move Inferno Lad swerved out slightly and it cost Felaxe some ground, but he had no chance to beat General A., which was over the line the winner by a length and a half. Felaxe had beaten Inferno Lad four! lengths, and the latter was half a dozen lengths before Big Business. Willis Sharpe Kilmer made his first api pearance of the meeting and he had the thrill of seeing his home-bred filly. Mint Drift, a daughter of Mint Briar and Drift-wood, the winner in the field of eighteen juvenile fillies that raced over the five-sixteenths distance. She had to show some degree of courage to score over E. A. Iglei hearts Lady Bracadale and J. F. Pattersons Semi Precious saved third from Jean Brown, The start was a good one and, while Mint Drift left from an outside stall, she was so. alert that she was soon able to cross over until she was well towards the inside of the field "at the end. Lady Bracadale was always close after and Semi Precious, after leaving slowly, soon found her way into contention and her race was an excellent one. At the end Mint Drift was doing her best to beat Lady Bracadale by a half length Continued on eleventh pageJM BROWN WISDOM LUCKY Continued from first page.y and Semi Precious was only another neck back. Marshall Fields Sobieha won her second race of the meeting when she scored six furlongs in the third, for cheap three-year-olds. Strategy, from the Wheatley Stable,; raced to second place and third fell to M, Lowensteins Zegora. The only other starters were Oil Queen, Flash o White and Jungle Boy. Long rode a wonderfully confident race on the Field filly when he was content to have Zegora steal away into a long early lead. He rated the daughter of Sir Gallahad III. along back of her and it was not until the stretch that the Lowenstein filly tired and Sobieha galloped past to win going away by five lengths. Willis Sharpe Kilmer was an arrival and is here for an extended stay.
