HIGH-CLASS FIELD ASSURED Twenty of Best at Fair Grounds in Mardi Gras Handicap. Jimmy Moran Will Try to Repeat and Ahiong His Competitors Will Be Bargello, Spanish Play and Surf Board. NEW ORLEANS, La., Feb. 2 With the twenty eligibles, including the outstanding material on the grounds, the renewal of the ,000 added Mardi Gras Handicap, coming up next Tuesday, Mardi Gras Day, at the Louisiana Jockey Clubs Fair Grounds, should rival in quality of the participants any previous running of the old holiday fixture. Eligibles, as announced today by racing secretary Joseph McLennan, include Jimmy Moran, M. Goldblatts winner of the last Mardi Gras Handicap; Knebelkamp and Morris Spanish Play, the Latonia and Louisiana Derby winner of last year; J. J. Robinsons Lucky Tom, champion three-year-old of the current winter season; C. V. Whitneys great veteran stakes winner, Bargello; E. Haughtons Wo tan, most successful handicap performer during the recent Jefferson Park meeting; Southland Stables Playtime, successful in the New Years Handicap at the Fair Grounds last winter; Greentree Stables Surf Board and others. In addition to Lucky Tom, Mr. Robinson is represented by Renaissance, also a three-year-old, and under present plans trainer H. C. Riddle may send one or both after the prize. Col. E. R. Bradleys Bar Hunter and Broad Meadows are others among the eligibles, and with the two seasoned stars in superb racing trim, a Bradley victory, always popular, may develop. The race will be contested over a distance of a mile and one-sixteenth and weights, now being worked out by secretary McLennan, will be announced Saturday. Practically all the nominees are ready for performance at this distance and it is assured a majority of the twenty eligibles, and all the most brilliant among them will go.- Such a field as Jimmy Moran, winner of the Pontchartrain Handicap at the same track last Saturday; Spanish Play, Surf Board, Lucky Tom, Playtime, Bargello, Broad Meadows, Wotan, Glastonbury, Prince Pest, Prince Farthing and Quatre Bras H. would not only establish a new standard for excellence and contention for the current season, but for several past Fair Grounds meetings. The feature will be supported by one of the best cards of the winter.
