" . ; . , ! ; , . i : ; PLANS FOR LIGHTNING BOLT Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Star to Race at Bowie Track. Trainer James Healy Plans to Take Advantage of Present Advanced Condition of Horses. BOWIE, Md., March 8. Lightning Bolt, handicap champion of the winters racing in Florida, is the star of the string which James W. Healy will campaign for Mrs. John Hay Whitney during the Southern Maryland Agricultural Associations spring meeting, beginning April 1. The four-year-old gelded son of Wrack and Margie C, established a one mile and an eighth and a one mile and a quarter track record at Miami. He is right at his best and should prove a tough proposition for any mans horse when sent over a route during the approaching meeting. Trainer Healy plans to race, in addition to Lightning Bolt, eleven other of Mrs. Whitneys thoroughbreds. It is the largest string the New York sportswoman has ever raced here in the spring and her decision to ship so many horses was due to trainer Healys desire to strive for purses when he knew his horses were fit. Only a few of Mrs. Whitneys horses which raced during the winter will race here. The majority of her thoroughbreds wintered at Bennings near Washington and will come here fresh and ready to run at the first opportunity. In winning the Hialeah Park Handicap on February 6 this year, Lightning Bolt carried 110 pounds and set a new record of 1:50 to win by a length and a half from Kincsen, Waterway, Royal Ruffin, Com-stockery, Sunfire, Impish, Street Singer, Raccoon and Espinaca in the order named. On February 17 Lightning Bolt further advanced his claim to titular honor by winning the Jockey Club Handicap. In this mile and one-quarter effort the gelding carried 117 pounds and set a new record of 2:03 to win by a length and a quarter from Sunfire, Kincsen, Impish and Royal Ruffin in the order named. In an effort to give Lightning Bolt every possible advantage during the spring racing, trainer Healy is dickering for the services of jockey A. Robertson. The latter rode the gelding in his two record performances in Florida and is certain to have the mounts here, providing his contract employer, Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, does not have a representative in the same race Lightning Bol starts in. Mrs. Whitney has several good two-year-olds at Bennings, that is, if recent morning trials can be taken as a criterion and if they run to promise it wont be surprising to see her head the list of money winning owners during the approaching meeting.
