COVERING CONSTANT SURPRISE Neglected Filly Wins at Long Odds f Produces Exceptionally Good Winners in Stud. SAN BRUNO, Calif., March 19. George A. Pope, Jr., who has campaigned at Tanforan, had two horses entered in the Tijuana sport on a stormy day several seasons ago. The "preferred" one was lost in the shuffle and the other an unprepossessing filly called Covering scored at odds of about 100 to 1. It was the popular polo players bad luck he did not recognize Coverings quality. Covering has a way of fooling the racing clan. She not only scored when neglected, but since being retired to the stud she is continually surprising. No one seems to be able to take the daughter of War Cry with much seriousness. At the meeting at Tanforan, to begin Thursday, March 31, three sons of the well known, but underestimated mare, are likely to compete under the silks of various owners. They are: Bahamas, winner of the Agua Caliente Derby and Pacific Coast Breeders Association Handicap. Liolele, winner of handicaps at Agua Caliente. Silk Covering, a two-year-old. It may be that Silk Covering is destined to be as good or better than either Bahamas or Liolele and that will be in accordance with the unexpected happenings connected with the matron right along. When Covering had her first foal, by the phenomenally fleet Easter Bells, C. A. Hart-well offered to trade her to George J. Meyer for the Rock .View, mare Vain Chick. The hoodoo hovering over the mare kept Meyer from making the exchange and he has had a hard time ever since trying to explain to himself his want of vision. Vain Chick failed to deliver in the way of producing stakes and handicap winners.
