ILLINOIS TURF ENTHUSIASTS ♦ Twenty-Five Local Owners Have Strings at Homewood. ♦ Extraordinary Advance of Turf Interests In State Shown by Chicagoans and Their Big Stables. » The extraordinary advancement of Chicago and Illinois thoroughbred sport is reflected in an announcement made by C. W. Hay, general manager of Washington Park. During the meeting, beginning at that course next Monday, continuing thirty days, more than twenty-five local owners -and breeders will participate in the campaign. No less than 300 horses will wear colors representing these individuals. General manager Hay finds assurance of success in this response of Illinois sportsmen. It is a realization, he states, of Illinois horsemen to assume turf leadership. The list of those who have registered for Washington Park action and the number of their racers include the following: Stuyvesant Peabody, 14; Marshall Field, 5; Mrs. Emil Denemark, 20; Nash Bros., 15; J. J. Coughlin, 16; A. A. Baroni, 14; Otto Lehmann, 10; Jake Lowenstein and Albert Sabath, 22; Fred M. Grabner, 11; Superior Stable, 14; Ward and Burton, 9; Coldstream Stud Stable, 19; L. M. Severson, 7; John Marsch, 18; J. Greenebaum, 3; W. Potts, 15; Knebelkamp and Morris, 16; E. L. Swikert, 24 ; B. M. Rosenheims Rosehome Stable, 10; J. D. Mikel, 20; N. W. Churchs North-way Stable, 10; Charles W. Bidwill 10; Bid-will and Lewis, 8; James Norris, 18; A. Bartel-stein, 12; W. C. and E. W. Reichert, 15. It is expected that additional Chicago and Illinois owners and breeders will be added to the roster. It is probable that on inaugural day at least 350 performers will be ready to display the silks of sportsmen in this city and state. The list of nominations in stake events, beginning with the Washington Park Handicap, to be decided on the opening day, and the remaining six, including the richest feature, the American Derby, to be run Saturday, June 18, embraces a greater number of Illinois-owned horses than is shown in any previous year of Chicago racing. In the Derby, Illinois owners numbering ten are bidding for this rich prize with eighteen horses. Other feature events attracted entries from a greater number of owners. The Washington Park Handicap drew twenty-three nominations. John Marsch tops the list with more entries than any other Chi-ago sportsman, but the Nash Brothers Coldstream Stud, A. Bartelstein, Mrs. E. Denemark and Charles W. Bidwill are well represented. A
