NOTED MARE CLEOPATRA DEAD LEXINGTON, Ky., May 17.— W. R. Coes great race mare Cleopatra, dam of Pompey, Caesarion, Laughing Queen, Selene and Nile Maiden, dropped dead in her stall at Shoshone Stud Sunday night. Manager Hugh Fontaine stated that the night watchman heard her groan and saw her fall and die almost immediately. She leaves a chestnut colt by Pennant, which was foaled Saturday night, and has been given to a foster mother. Cleopatra was imported in utero by Arthur B. Hancock and was foaled at his Claiborne Stud, Paris, Ky., in 1917, being by Corcyra — Gallice, by Gallinule. Mr. Coe bought her at Saratoga as a yearling for ,100. She won 6,937 for him on the turf and her son, Pompey, now a successful sire at Shoshone Stud, won 43,495 for Mr. Coe.
