Unna ■ sented, as the local sportsmen, Abe Bartelstein and John Marsch, have both named entries. t Bartelstein, whose horses led the winning list at the Tanforan meeting, has elected to send three to the post. The trio are Polydorus, star of the California meet- ing; Sidney Grant, which gave Plucky Play such a tussle in the Riggs Memorial in Maryland last fall, and Hillsborough. The Marsch colors will be carried by Camp Boss, barely beaten by Woodcraft on Thursday, and Prince Atheling, one of the stars of New Orleans and Kentucky racing. Polydorus, with Dr. Freeland, is top weight, being asked to carry 118 pounds. SPANISH PLAYS FAST WORK. Overnight favorites for the event are Pittsburgher, runner-up to Mate in the American Derby of last season, and Spanish Play, Knebelkamp and Morris good four-year-old. Both have been working here and were given their final preparations this morning. Spanish Play, which recently went the full distance in 1:53 for one of the best trial moves of the meeting, went an easy half mile in :512i over a rather heavy track today, while Pittsburgher covered five furlongs in l:05"i. Should the track remain soft it will favor Pittsburgher, a proven slow track horse. Of the others in the field Dr. Freeland and Lady Broadcast are not to be overlooked. The latter, which has been staging a comeback this season, will be carrying the silks of Herbert M. Woolf and will have the clever rider, jockey C. E. Allen, in the saddle, while Dr. Freeland, should he run back to his good race at Exposition Park, is certain to be a factor. Dr. Freeland breezed a half mile in :53 this morning and appeared to be in good condition. WOTAN MAY SURPRISE. Aside from the racers already mentioned, three others are entered and any one may spring a surprise. Wotan, racing for Ed Haughton, is capable of running a fast race when fit, while Canfli, from the Three Ds Stock Farm Stable, won the Arlington Oaks last season, and Street Singer has a chance to improve. The weather was still unsettled today and it was difficult to determine whether the race would be run under sunny skies or in the rain. It is almost a certainty, however, that, regardless of climatic conditions, the event will be decided over a soft track, which, however, would not greatly detract interest, as the majority of those entered can run in any sort of going. The only doubtful starter Friday was Lady Broadcast, but even if she does not elect to try, jockey Allen will have a mount as, in the event the mare is scratched, he has contracted with owner Haughton to ride Wotan. Saturdays race will be the sixth running; « Continued on twenty-fourth page.. 1 l l 1 1 I 1 I 1 1 I 1 1 1 1 BEST RACE OF LOCAL SEASON Continued from first page. of the Robert M. Sweitzer Handicap, which is named for one of the founders of Wash- ington Park, who is now a steward at the beautiful plant. Those previously success- ful in the race were: Smiling Gus, Flat Iron Mowlee, Toro and Jean Lafitte. It is expected that a large crowd will make the trip to the Homewood course Sat- urday and, aside from the feature, an in- teresting card has been arranged. Post time, as usual, will be 2:15 p. m.
