BURGOO KING STARTER t Kentucky Derby and Preakness Winner in Withers Stakes. $ Six Speedy Three-Year-Olds to Measure Strides With the Bradley Champion. ♦ ————— —————— i I ♦ 1 1 The field for the Withers Stakes at one mile, Saturdays big attraction at Belmont Park, together with weights and riders follow: Horse. Wt. Rider. Burgoo King 118 James Pompeius 118 Knapp I Osculator 118 Workman Larranaga 118 Fields | Boatswain 118 Robertson i Sunmelus 118 Pascuma Pairbypair 118 Steffen ; ................ i NEW YORK, N. Y., May 27— With both the Withers and the Corinthian Steeplechase Handicap down for decision at Belmont Park Saturday afternoon, the Westchester Racing Association again offers a notable program of sport. The Withers promises exceedingly well and it will bring out Edward R. Bradleys great colt, Burgoo King, which already has the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness to his credit. In starting the son of Bubbling Over an effort will be made to complete a triple that has only been accomplished once before when in 1919 Sir Barton added the Withers to his victories in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. There are no penalties in the Withers, which is over the mile distance and its being eight pounds below scale, the colts are all to carry 118 pounds. The Bradley champion is opposed by some remarkably good milers that will make his task probably a harder one than he had in the mile and a quarter of the Kentucky Derby or the mile and three-sixteenths of the Preakness. In both of these prizes he ran down the pacemakers, while that has to be accomplished running a mile Saturday afternoon. BOATSWAIN DANGEROUS. In the Preakness it was Walter M. Jeffords Boatswain that made the pace and he hung on well to finish second to Burgoo King. He may possibly be the real menace to the son of Bubbling Over. W. R. Coe is represented by two extremely fast ones in Pompeius and Osculator, a pair that have been brought up to the running magnificently by trainer Creech. Larranaga, the son of Apprehension, that races for the Oak Ridge Stable is another of the Withers company that is not lacking in speed. He has been thoroughly seasoned in races and should give an excellent account of himself. Mrs. John Hertz is represented by Pairbypair and he is another speed horse, though the mile is probably his limit, for the get of Noah are principally famous for sprinting quality. Willis Sharpe Kilmer has as his candidate Sunmelus, the home-bred son of Sun Briar and Polyanea, that has frequently shown excellent form. The seven named . give promise of a worthy renewal of the ! famous old prize that had its first running away back in 1874 at old Jerome Park. And with the exception of Burgoo King, there is no entry for the old classic from a sportsman who already has a victory to his credit. It was in 1929 that Blue Larkspur, one of the greatest thoroughbreds that ever ■ raced for Edward R. Bradley, was winner of the old prize. »
