DREARY DAY AT LATONIA Cold Weather, Following Rain, Affects Covington Attendance. Muddy Track Results in Many "Withdrawals Feature Race Declared Off and Substitute Furnished. LATONIA, Ky., Nov. 9. Rain, which fell here last night, was followed by much colder weather and todays racing at Latonia was conducted under the most unfavorable conditions encountered during the current meeting, which ends Saturday, following a run of twenty-eight days. From yesterdays summerlike weather, the mercury dropped to such a low level that some snow, the first of the season, was reported by early risers and the cold and cloudy afternoon was just about the dreariest here in many days. As the weather held the attendance down to the regulars, the deep, muddy track forced a drastic change in the program when withdrawals from the White Fence Farm Handicap, which was to have featured the sport, were so numerous that the attractive race had to be discarded in favor of a substitute given over to platers. In filling both, racing secretary W. H. Shelley divided the field of twelve named for the original eighth, six starting in each end, the first being offered as the fifth and the second at the end of the card. With the handicap off the program, the lioveland Claiming Purse, fourth event, comprised the principal offering. This brought out seven plater three-year-olds to race three-quarters and resulted in a driving finish, in which the Fairview Farms Shaker Lady was winner. She scored by three-quarters of a length over Altmark, which, in turn, defeated K. Russell by only a half-length. Hoops was just a head back of K. Russell. CRAFTY JIMMY SMITH. The crafty Jimmy Smith had Shaker Lady in front from the end of the first eighth and, keeping her going in her best fashion, brought her through to a victory that marked her fifth of the year and first of the meeting. In the division of the "split," original eighth race, run as the fifth, Dr. Parrish hung up the third victory of the day for the betting choices and, like one of the previous two that made good, Dr. Parrish was at odds-on. He won easily at one mile and one-sixteenth over Plutarch, Coin Collector, Chum, Tommy Tickle and Big Shot. The veteran winner took the lead over Plutarch and Tommy Tickle entering the last half, and, after piling up a big advantage on the lower turn, came on to win without being fully extended. Plutarch came through with a good performance, while Tommy Tickle quit badly after showing speed for little more than five-eighths. F. O. McAtees Jessie Dear and H. Bagur, the young apprentice who has been showing considerable skill here, made up the winning combination in the opening race, or Paints-ville Purse, for all ages. Jessie Dear splashed to victory by five lengths ahead of Gift of Roses, favorite, and Sue Terry took third over Bobs Buddy and the two others. W. Moran, on Gift of Roses, was struck in an eye by flying gravel before going a quarter and it greatly handicapped him. Bagur rushed the winner to the front in the stretch and, taking a safe lead in the final eighth, she won well in hand. GOOD THING TRIUMPHANT. The P. T. Chinn stable "bagged" the second race for maiden juveniles, colts and geldings with Moroi, unsexed son of Mor-vich and Batanoea. Opened at 10 to 1 in the betting, odds against the winner -were chopped in steady gobs until he was held at odds-on when the wagering closed. Although Meteoric prevailed in the early lead and pulled away at the stretch turn, the winner easily wore him down with a determined charge in the closing three-sixteenths and drawing clear was safe from Long John, which closed stoutly on the inside. Meteoric was beaten more than two lengths for second. The victor, ridden by J. McCoy, was trained and saddled by C. E. Patterson. R. L. Stivers Parnell Bound was seen in his fourth winning performance in successive starts here when he outsprinted Barash-kova, Making Bubbles and others at three-quarters in the third race. The victor found Barashkova furnishing contention aplenty at every stage and for a brief distance in the stretch had to be content with second Continued on second page. DREARYDAYATLATONIA Continued from first page. place. After getting to the front, however, Barashkova tired and the more steady winner beat him out by a neck. Holding on well in an even performance, Making Bubbles had third place all to himself and the inconsistent Smear filed in home in front of the others. The latter was second choice to the winner. The Spring Valley Claiming Purse, sixth on the program, brought out eight two-year-olds to race a mile and seventy yards and this also fell to the favorite when the useful Fair Rochester was winner. It was the third success at the meeting for the L. Jones and Son youngster and he had to be much the best to overcome adverse luck, both at the start and first turn and followed a course well out in the track throughout. Brought up gradually, he got away with the honors by a length and one-quarter over Cresta Run, which, in turn, was showing Helen Bab the way by more than two .lengths. Kilmore, which finished in fourth position, -was indulged with much of the pacemaking and, after tiring badly, stumbled in the stretch.
