NEW ORLEANS OPENING NEAR Jefferson Park Dressed Up in Anticipation of Inaugural. Improved Road Leading to Main Entrance of Shrewsbury Track Denemark Sending Twenty Horses. NEW ORLEANS, La., Nov. 9. Preparations for the opening of the New Orleans racing season at Jefferson Park on Thanksgiving Day went forward with a rush Wednesday. At the Shrewsbury course general manager Robert S. Eddy and Placide Frigerio, track superintendent, were completing most of the important work attendant on the opening. A lavish display of paint was noticeable at the course. The club house, judges stand and other buildings have been brightened up, and a greatly improved road leading to the main entrance was considered as practically finished. Completion of the road will improve facilities for motorists to the racing grounds. General manager Eddy had word from R. T. Watts, trainer of the extensive Mrs. E. Denemark stable. Trainer Watts advised that he needed twenty stalls bedded down and expected to have his horses on the grounds not later than Thursday. At the Fair Grounds the advance shipment of the John Marsch stable were put into quarters. The string comprised ten head, of which Homer L., Sure Pop, Lady Marsch and Grantor were the older horses. Six head of yearlings completed the shipment. The horses came in charge of J. T. Mooney and will be consolidated with the string Phil Reuter is shipping here following the close of the Maryland season. Another arrival at the Orleans Parrish course was G. H. Morton. He had Underdun, Gold Ridge and Escobanette. F. Merimee checked in with Happy Fellow, Chat Eagle, Jaipur and Fair Boy, which will race in the interest of T. H. Lynch. Smaller shipments to reach the Fair Grounds were horses belonging to P. T. Phelan, H. A. Coulson, L. F. OLeary and J. J. Neel. J. Coffey, who has raced here many years, will return with the veteran Searington. The horse has regained good form and should earn brackets at the Jefferson Park meeting. A. Y. They are expected to reach Jefferson Park next week. Frank V. Frederico, local man and a new- comer in the racing colony, has three horses quartered at Jefferson Park. They are Broad Smile, Star Quince and Jefferson Girl. H. T. Fleming, who trains the horses of the King Bruce Stable, arrived recently with the two-year-olds Mokur, Rabbit Bruce, Easter Brun and the older horses Outer Harbor, Forget Not, Coral Beach and Young Bill. Tom Flippen is an expected arrival, and he plans on racing Bud Charlton, Luck Piece, Harold Jr. and Scandal Sheet at Jefferson. Frank Grand, a local man, has Charlie Bill and Junior C. at Jefferson Park. The horses were purchased last spring from a sheriffs sale held here. General manager Eddy has placed his order for badges, and he is expecting them to arrive November 18. J. G. Goode, who is handling the horses of J. W. Parrish and others, will have a powerful stable to race at Jefferson Park in Depression, Oh Dave, and the two-year-olds Popo, New Baby, Captain Logan, Oziti, Little Connelly and Carnival Queen. Another well balanced stable quartered at Jefferson Park is that of M. Gorbet, who will race Port o Play, King Cherokee, Valley, Arcadian Flag, Amsterdam, General Camel, Marsdale, Ada Epinard and Childs Camille. Gorbet lost the star of his barn at Sportsmans Park when Martha D. fell and broke her neck when caught in close quarters during the running of a race.
