CALIFORNIA RACING MEASURE IN DOUBT I SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Nov. 9. The fate of initiative amendment Number 5, which proposes to legalize and tax racing in California, was in doubt early this afternoon. With approximately two-thirds of the total state vote officially reported, the measure was running about 15,000 behind, with the trend of the count still against the sport. However, this apparent defeat on the face of the returns was offset by the situation in Los Angeles County, and friends of the bill look to that section to turn the tide of battle into victory for the measure. With only half the precincts having been reported at 2 p. m. today, Los Angeles county gave a plurality of nearly 11,000 for the measure. Should this ratio be maintained, Los Angeles would roll up a majority of more than 20,000 in favor of Number 5, which would probably be sufficient to put legalized racing over the top in the state. The latest available returns at press time for this edition of Pacific Daily Racing Form, were as follows: 6,533 precincts out of the States total of 10,547 gave on Proposition Number 5: Yes, 453,110; No, 467,990. Los Angeles County 1,861 precincts out of 3,538: Yes, 139,962; No, 129,099. San Francisco County gave the measure a majority of 39,000, and Alameda county came in with a handsome plurality in favor of the bill. i- -.4
