EIGHTY-FOUR IN AMERICAN DERBY * Brokers Tip, Head Play, Charley O. and Ladysman Head List of Eligibles for Worlds Fair Race — Nine Fillies Among Those Named » Eighty-four three-year-olds, of which nine are fillies and fifteen are geldings, are eligible for this years American Derby, the coveted fixture to be renewed at Washington Park, Saturday, June 3, according to announcement today by Col. Matt J. Winn, president of the Washington Park Jockey Club. All of the three-year-olds, seen in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, together with a number of others possessing championship potentialities, but for some reason or another, missing the big Kentucky and Maryland fixtures, are named, and championship aspects are greater than in any year since the race was revived in 1926. It is probable that the rivalry between Brokers Tip and Head Play, the two great western colts, will reach its peak in this race. Also that in addition to those encountered by the E. R. Bradley and Mrs. S. B. Mason three-year-olds in races to date, a number of others, physically qualified to do so, will make this test of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness heroes, the most severe they will face in all their campaigning. Again, there is the chance that the American Derby winner will turn up in a three-year-old which was not named for the Kentucky Derby or Preakness and the injection of a half-dozen or so such three-year-olds into the struggle for supremacy, promises to be one of the outstanding features of the Washington Park race. Among American Derby eligibles are several good ones which have not as yet had an opportunity to race with the cracks of the Churchill Downs and Pimlico races. Among these may be mentioned the Audley Farms Trace Call, M. L. Schwartz Gold Basis, Le Mar Stock Farms Misguide, Arden Farms Quel Jeu, Coldstream Studs Ber-trano, Marshall Fields Nimbus, F. A. Griffiths Sarada, Northway Stables Northgalis, H. C. Phipps De Valera, Joseph E. Wideners Golden Way, W. R. Coes Pomposo and others. Sarada and Trace Call, both taken down with illness almost on the eve of the Kentucky Derby, have fully recovered and will be among the first candidates to reach the local track. These two great colts have many admirers and will have backing to win the Washington Park race. In addition to Brokers Tip, Head Play, Charley O., and Ladysman, which accounted for the four money places in the Kentucky Derby, eligibles for the American Derby also include Kerry Patch, Dark Winter, Sun Archer, Silent Shot, Utopian, Col. Hatfield, Projectile, Spicson, Damascene, Dynastic, Jungle King, Caterwaul, The Darb, Fair Rochester, At Top, Advising Anna, Pom-ponius, Boilermaker, Warren Jr., Technique, One Chance, Strideaway, Edelweiss, Red Whisk and others, the entry list of eighty-four representing the best in training. The nine fillies are My Charlotte, Bam-boula, Bright Bubble, Technique, Advising Continued on twenty-second page. 84 IN AMERICAN DERBY ____ Continued from first page. Anna. Dark Love, Ridge Lady, At Top and Edelweiss. It was forty-nine years ago when the first American Derby was run over the old Washington Park track and the winner was the filly Modesty, in the colors of that colorful turfman, Edward Corrigan. It has been forty years since the Worlds Fair American Derby, decided over the same old course and won by Boundless, ridden by the late Edward "Snapper" Garrison. Now with scenes changed and a new Washington Park, comes another American Derby with another Worlds Fair A Century of Progress and the color, glamour and tumult of Boundless day will be reenacted. No filly has succeeded in duplicating Modestys feat, but as very few have tried, this should not be discouraging to the owners of the several fillies named for the coming renewal. Following Modestys success came triumphs for Volante, Silver Cloud, C. H. Todd, Emperor of Norfolk, Spokane, Uncle Bob, Strathmeath, Carlsbad, Boundless, Rey El Santa Anita, Pink Coat, Sidney Lucas, Robert Waddell, Wyeth, The Picket, and High Ball, while runnings since Boot to Boot scored in the 1926 revival brought victory to Hydromel, Toro, Windy City, Reveille Boy, Mate and Gusto. In 1928 the race was run over the Arlington Park track. The distance since 1927 has been one. mile and one-quarter, while previous runnings were at one mile and one-half.
