BILLY M. YOUTHFUL SURPRISE ♦ Son of Peter Pan Scores in Jamaica Stake Race. * Outsider Takes Measure of C. V. Whitneys Lynx Eye— Best Sport of Metropolitan Season. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 13.— Billy M., a son of Peter Pan and Ship of War, which races for Samuel R. Rosoff, furnished a rare surprise at Jamaica Saturday when, with a sensational stretch run, he was winner of the Youthful Stakes, a five furlongs dash for juveniles that had a value of ,540 to the winner. Well back of the son of Peter Pan came C. V. Whitneys Lynx Eye to beat Dunlilt, the best two-year-old of the Havana season, for second place. Billy M. was so little considered that 50 to 1 was obtainable against his chances. For the second Saturday of the meeting, an excellent card had been prepared and the crowd was one of the largest that ever graced the Jamaica course. The weather, though threatening, was pleasant and the sport was the best that has been offered since the opening of the New York season. Before the running of the Youthful Stakes, Volomite, the Alex Gordon starter, ran off with Pascuma and before he was pulled up he had circled the track. This naturally eliminated him from contention and he was simply galloped along back of the others. The start was a good one and Coltiletti rushed Prospect Park at a killing pace. Robertson went after him with Lynx Eye and the pair were soon three lengths before the others and racing along at top speed. Dunlilt was heading the others and then came Sgt_ Byrne and Chimney Top with Billy M. following these. As the leaders went along locked for a first quarter in :2andland and a half in :46%, they held a long lead, but it was a pace that was beginning to tell at the end of the half mile. Dunlilt was hanging on to them and racing strongly as the stretch was reached, but Billy M. had shaken off the others and, well out on the track in the best footing, was making up ground rapidly. Inside the last furlong Lynx Eye finally put Prospect Park away and as the Gallagher colt tired Dunlilt moved into second place, but Billy M. was moving up on the outside and in the final seventy yards he was past to be the winner by a length and a half. Lynx Eye had saved second place by three lengths and Dunlilt had beaten the tired Prospect Park for third by four lengths. Fator, who rode the Rosoff colt, timed his run perfectly and the time hung out, :59%, made it a remarkable performance over the Jamaica course. Billy M. is one that spent the winter in Florida, but he was only started once at the Hialeah Park meeting. Since his return from the South the colt worked well for Ed Sietas and it is possible he will go on to better things. During the winter an offer of 5,000 was refused for the son of-Peter Pan and he may be worth much more. James Butlers Apprentice was winner of his third purse of the meeting when he took the Kings County Purse. Snap Back from the Brookmeade Stable, raced to second place, with the Greentree Stables Curacao easily beating Andy Schuttingers Pilate for third. Trainer R. McKeown lodged a claim, Saturday, against George McMitchells Oriley for not carrying the proper weight, which should have been 112 pounds. The claim was allowed by the stewards, but it did not affect the betting.
