ANNUAL , SUMMER : MEETING ga BEGINS AT ... SARATOGA Bright Outlook for Sport of Highest Caliber at Americas Famed Resort Equipoise to Start in Wilson Stakes, One of Opening Features Flash Stakes to Bring Out Good Band of Juveniles SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., Aug. 2. Beautful Saratoga, one of the most delightful of American racing grounds, will begin its long meeting tomorrow. The thoroughbreds will hold sway until September 2, and during the season some of the greatest of American stake races will be decided. For the opening there are two important features in the Flash, at five and a half furlongs, for juveniles, and the Wilson, at one mile, that invites the older division. The supporting card is an attractive one and the opening will be 9 up to the best traditions of the famous old course. After a drought that had continued since Decoration Day, there came a welcome rain-fill Tuesday afternoon that accomplished wonders in freshening up the parched grass of the infield. It also was of great benefit to the racing strip and the going is in better condition than it has been at any time this year. That was evidenced by the time shown by the horses that were galloped during the work hours. EVERY STALL RESERVED. Every stall on the course, and at Horse Haven, was long since reserved and for two weeks horses haye been training at both the Oklahoma training course, and over the main course in preparation for the meeting. For the renewal of the Flash, a prize first run in 1869, there are seventeen of the eligi-bles named to perform and with such a field the guarantee of ,500 will be exceeded. This list contains the names of some that have already shown high quality and it is a representative company. A. J. Joyner has named four of the George D. Widener string in Chicstraw, Brown Jack, Kawagoe and Jack Low, a brother to Jack High, winner of the same race in 1928. Mrs. Charles A. Morys Sagamore stable is represented by Red Wagon, winner on both occasions he has been raced and another good one that came over from Arlington Park is Warren Wrights Prince Pom-pey. James Fitzsimmons will saddle Revere for William Woodward and Changeling which will race for H. C. Phipps. The Greentree stable selection for .he running is First Minstrel, a son of Royal Minstrel and Untidy. Trumplay is Healeys selection from among the C. V. Whitney eligibles and among the others are Dartle, Aunt Flor, Agrarian, Peace Chance, Spoilt Beauty, Elylee and Senador. SIX OPPOSE EQUIPOISE. For the Wilson it was not expected that many trainers would have the temerity to send out a horse against tho C. V. Whitney champion Equipoise, but there are six named to race against the son of Pennant and Swinging. These are A. C. Bostwicks Mate, George D. Wideriers Evening, Samuel D. Riddles Dwyer winner, War Glory, W. W. Vaughans Canron, Preston M. Burchs Tambour and the Woodland Farms Cocked Hat. Equipoise is giving away considerable weight to each opponent but he is only required to take up his scale weight of 126 pounds and the manner in which he has trained for the running suggests that it will be his easiest task in his unbeaten career this season. His victories have been in the Philadelphia Handicap at Havre de Grace, the Metropolitan and Suburban Handicaps at Belmont Park and the Arlington Handicap in Chicago. Each one of those named to race against the champion has worked exceedingly well for the engagement and there is a chance it will produce an excellent contest. There is a steeplechase that attracte"d nine entries and will prove a popular number on the opening day card. Six furlongs for three-year-old fillies attracts a smart lot and no fewer than twenty-two maiden two-year-olds are "named in the final race of the day. A mile for platers completes the offerings for the opening day. There will be a return to the antiquated method of a late drawing of post positions and there will be no printing of the jockeys Continued on twenty-second page. In recent years the program has shown both post positions and Jockeys, greatly to the convenience of patrons, but this year they have been ruled out as they were at all race courses in New York, except Belmont Park, where post positions were shown. Another race condition that will be tried out at the meeting affords allowances to horses entered in events of a mile or greater distance, that have never won at a mile. This provides that such three-year-olds obtain a three-pound allowance and older horses are allowed five pounds. Andy Schuttinger has brought Pilate back to his best form and he has high hope for him in the sprinting events. The son of Friar Rock, by reason of his wind affliction will be confined to sprinting. One of the green steeplechasers making ready for cross-country racing, that has attracted a deal of attention is Spinach. He has taken to the field naturally and, while he has no stake engagements, he will find many opportunities in overnight events. Frank Stevens has reported an unusual number of luncheon reservations in the clubhouse enclosure for the opening day.
