CLIFTONS LASS LIKES TRACK Defeats Marabou in the Heavy Going at Dorval Honest Susan Wins by Nose. MONTREAL, Que., Aug. 2 A card catering to the cheaper grade platers was furnished at Dorval for todays sport. The racing strip remained deep and heavy from the heavy rains of the past few days and gave those with a preference for the heavy going another chance. The weather left little to be desired and the crowd showed an increase over that of the past several days. The best field of the day met in the three-quarters Marlborough Claiming Purse, placed fifth on the card. Cliftons Lass, from the stable of Mrs. Arthur Brent, triumphed over R. F. Coppages Marabou. Logwood was third. Yankee Doodle dominated the early running and as he dropped back Tricycle took up the pacemaking burden, but his lead was of short duration. Cliftons Lass had been working her way into contention on the outside and went into command with a rush after straightening out for the run to the finish. The Coppage colorbearer loomed up threateningly nearing the furlong pole, but after a brief rush was unable to hold Cliftons Lass and was forced to accept defeat by an open length. Yankee Doodle, after dropping back, again moved into the contention straightening out in the stretch, but dropped back steadily thereafter and came back to the stand nodding badly. Honest Susan, after enjoying a lead of five lengths a quarter mile from the finish, barely lasted to take the one mile and a sixteenth of the fourth by a scant nose over Ham. Eight lengths back of the leading pair, Sedgie barely held on long enough to take the show award from Monks Fox. Ridden by apprentice Staszuk, the daughter of Torchilla displayed a fondness for the heavy going and took command in the run to the first turn. The filly continued to show the way and increased her lead to five lengths. It was at the stretch turn that Staszuk made the almost fatal mistake of going extremely wide, allowing Ham to move through on the inside of Honest Susan and get within striking distance. Staszuk did not become flustered by the determined bid of Ham and held Honest Susan together cleverly to take honors by the scantest of margins. The race was strictly between the leading pair, the others being far behind. Jockey C. Ralls guided his second winner of the afternoon when he scored with Luxury in the sixth, another six furlongs affair. Steponit raced to the place and Big Blue was third. Ralls previous winning ride was astride Cliftons Lass in the previous event. The second offering was a home-bred affair, fashioned for non-winners this year. The result was in the nature of a mild surprise when Chatham Queen led home the neglected Royal Beacon, to register by three parts of a length. The favorite, Die Cast, came with a rush through the stretch to take the show position. Jean Pittston and Kittle established the running for the first half mile, while Royal Beacon was not far away. When the early leaders began to shorten stride and went wide into the main stretch, Chatham Queen drove through and went into the lead. The winner continued courageously through the stretch and Thur-ber had Royal Beacon under a punishing drive, but was unable to overtake the leader. Die Cast, which had dropped back to last place in the run down the back stretch, came willingly in the last furlong.
