HAWTHORNE HANDICAP WORKS Late Date, Swivel and Action Show Good Form in Morning Gallops at Cicero. CICERO, 111., Aug. 2. Two fillies, the Aud-ley Farms Late Date and A. Pons Swivel, and N. E. Stantons colt, Action, looked unusually good in their final distance gallops for the Hawthorne Handicap, Wednesday morning. Swivel, the three-year-old daughter of Swift and Sure, breezed the nine furlongs distance of the Hawthorne Handicap, which is down for renewal Saturday, on a fast track in 1:56 and after a hard rain had changed the track surface to slop, Late Date ran a mile handily in 1:41, while Action galloped over the Hawthorne route in 1:53. While the latter son of Olambala was under mild pressure in the final quarter, the move was exceptionally fast under prevailing conditions and demonstrated that the Stanton candidate is at his best. While they are among the lesser lights of the brilliant field that will step forth for Saturdays race, one or all of the trio may prove quite troublesome under their light imposts. Following a long rest, Swivel appears to have regained her spring form and Late Dates recent successful invasion of Latonia, where she closely approached track record time, in winning the Enquirer Handicap, is proof enough that the Audley filly is something of a threat. Action has been racing well in handicap company and on his best performances has a chance to j rove a contender for "Hawthorne" honors. Heading the field for Saturdays stake, the first of six rich features to be run during the meeting, are N. W. Churchs Gallant Sir and Plucky Play; A. D. Woods Indian Runner and A. Bartelstein?s Polydorus.
