GILBERT ELSTON DISAPPOINTS Odds On Favorite Fails Backers in Covington Feature Race I Pass Proves to Be Too Good for Goldblatt GoldblattRacer Racer Weather Ideal and andTrack Track Fast LATONIA Ky June 14 The best offer ¬ ing on a lusterless program at Latonia this afternoon brought together a band of platers for a sprint of six furlongs and the Glen Helen Studs I Pass defeated Mose Gold blatts Gilbert Elston The result was a sharp blow to those who backed the Gold ¬ blatt racer down to oddson favoritism though the winner was second choice in the betting bettingF F P Letelliers Marie Jean was third while others which completed the field were Left Wing Rose Moss Angon Bridge and Onside OnsideGilbert Gilbert Elston had no excuse for his de ¬ feat except that he was not good enough and this despite a fourteenpound Concession from the winner Gilbert Elston began well and was in second place at the head of the stretch but he was no match for I Pass which got to the front after going a quarter and maintained a safe lead for the re ¬ mainder of the distance distancetAngon tAngon Bridge and Left Wing indulged in a bitter duel in the early stages but had nothing left when the real test came in the stretch both giving way badly in the final stages The performance of Marie Jean was a good one when she came from a good distance back to take third money beating Left Wing by a head for that part of the purse The latter was three lengths in front of Rose Moss at the finish while heads separated the last three horses horsesIn In spite of the abbreviated program of ofseven seven races the management was gratified gratifiedwith with the fine turnout of fans which was as asj j large as any this week The weather was wasideal ideal and the track fast As the betting indicated and with a shift in riders F C McAtees Gibbys Choice turned in one of the sharpest form reversals of the meeting when he was a galloping win ¬ ner of the fifth race one of the most at ¬ tractive of the day and which was for six of the getter grade distance performers at one and onesixteenth miles King Cicero which decisively defeated the winner in their previous meeting raced to second place six lengths in his wake and one and onehalf in advance of Royal Sport which gave a disappointing performance Continued on thirtieth page GILBERT ELSTON DISAPPOINTS Continued from first page In contrast to the victors last perform ¬ ance he raced well today and instead of quitting when called upon went to the front with ease and romped the remainder of the way Squall which was expected to give strong contention faded out of the picture after racing to the stretch and was far be ¬ hind the successful trio when they finished finishedJ J F ONeils Fogarty which for a time was thought to be of Kentucky Derby cali ¬ ber but which later proved a big disappoint ¬ ment was dropped in with a band of 1000 top and bottom platers in the opening race and won with ease Under the capable handling of D Taylor the son of Altawood won the race by two and onehalf lengths beating Why Not Double Date and five others In the light of his poor races at Beulah Park his backers received the liberal price of 9 for 2 on the colt coltThe The second race tor twoyearold maiden fillies was won by W F Axtons Paradisi ¬ cal which scored in hollow fashion Getting to the front on the turn Paradisical steadily lengthened her lead and at the finish was six lengths in front of her nearest rival Donnapeep DonnapeepThe The longest price of the meeting was paid off on Donnapeep which paid 18320 to place and 9100 to show while Grand Poise also paid a liberal dividend to show 2840 The winner paid 4 to 1 1Mrs Mrs J P Keezeks Santerno accounted for the third race while Thunder Lou was second and Prince Doo third Santerno gave those who backed him into favoritism some anxious moments when he raced the first quarters in last place but on the turn in the straightaway the fiveyearold gelding literally mowed down his opponents and won with ease by two and a half lengths going away awayThunder Thunder Lou which raced in close attend ¬ ance of Prince Doo the pacemaker for a quarter looked a winner at the head of the stretch but in the final eighth she had little left with which to stave off the rush of the winner Prince Doo finished third in an im ¬ proved effort
