USE STALLS OF THREE TRACKS Overflow at Hawthorne Goes to Sportsmans and Aurora. Free Van Service -From Fox Valley Track to Cicero Course Expect 1,200 Horses. Such is the demand for Stalls for the coming Hawthorne race meeting, opening on May 23, that two extra race tracks will be used to accommodate them. It has long been the custom for the Hawthorne overflow to be. stabled in the adjoining Sportsmans Park barns. But this year the Aurora, track likewise will be used. Hawthornes 1936 meeting has attracted more, applications than ever before. President Albert Sabath. of the Hawthorne track concluded negotiations yesterday with Robert Eddy, president of the Aurora track, for the use of Auroras barns. The Fox Valley track is approximately thirty-eight miles from Hawthorne, but a free van service put into operation by the west side track will be available to the horsemen who remain at Aurora. Since that track gets the local season under way, the course will be available for workouts after the Hawthorne meeting opens. Hawthorne and Sportsmans Park together can accommodate between 950 and. 1,000 horses. General manager C W. Hay had nearly all those stalls filled before he got within sight of the bottom of the pile of applications. Seven large and powerful stables, -those of the Calumet Farm, the Milky Way Farms, Tony Pelleteri, T. C. Worden, Shandon Farm, Col. E. R. Bradley and Valdina Farm, accounted for 210 stalls by themselves. Numerous other trainers engaged space for from ten to twenty thoroughbreds. When the applications exceeded the capacity of the track, Aurora co-operated. A total of 1,200 may be on hand for the thirty-one day meeting. Hawthorne will van over all scheduled starters on the days program and they will be quartered in a receiving barn until their engagements are filled. Afterwards they will be vanned back to Aurora at Hawthornes expense. With three tracks available for workouts in the morning, the congestion is expected to be relieved considerably. Several carloads of horses will be shipped here following the close of the major Texas season Saturday. Many others will arrive after the running of the. Kentucky Derby on May 2. Most of those Derby candidates will also be candidates for the Chicago Derby, to be run June 20 for a 5,000 added purse.
