THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1936 DELPHINIUM, Bay Colt, by Blue Larkspur Multiflora; Property of Brookmeade Stable; Made His Three-Year-Old Debut in the Chesapeake Stakes in Which He Finished Second, Tiring Near the End After Setting the Pace. See Kentucky Derby Book for Past Performance. By NORRIS ROYDEN. T.,.r A smartly-bred colt of considerable promise among the three-year-olds is Delphinium, a son of Blue Larkspur from Multiflora, in the Brookmeade Stable of Mrs. Isabel Dodge. Sloane. Delphinium," a well-named half-brother to Helianthus, a good sprinter of a few years back, enjoyed early, favor among last years juveniles because of his triumph "in the National Stallion Stakes at Belmont Park in June, but he was not able to win since. However, he was up against the best of his division and frequently acquitted himself "nobly.. Delphiniums two triumphs among his thirteen starts were scored within a short space of time, the first coming in an overnight event, in which he triumphed at the immediate expense of Bold Venture, beating that fast colt four lengths while running five furlongs in :58. That put the Brookmeade colt in the proper condition for the National Stallion Stakes, most important of the early-season events for two-year-olds. In the National Stallion, Delphinium stood a hard drive to score by a narrow margin. He had up scale weight of 122 pounds and ran the five furlongs in :58, with White Cockade finishing second and Valevictorian taking third honors. He wasnt quite so fortunate in the Great American Stakes at Aqueduct and had to be content with fourth honors back of Snark, Parade Girl and Maeriel. Delphinium broke into the money again in the Flash Stakes at Saratoga in finishing second to Red Rain, but leading home Galsac, Postage Due and many other speedy youngsters. He was well up from the start, but dropped back in the stretch only to outgame all the others save Red Rain. On the strength of that performance, the Brookmeade colt was shipped West for the Arlington Futurity, but was never prominent. The muddy condition of the track may or may not have had something to do with his disappointing effort. Back at Saratoga in the Special, Delphinium set the pace until well into the stretch, but weakened and was overtaken by Coldstream, Red Rain and Bien Joli. He was fourth again in the Sanford Stakes, which was run over a sloppy track, but at the end of the six furlongs, Crossbow XL, Bow to Me and Sangreal were only inches ahead of him, after he had been in the thick of contention from the start. The-final Saratoga performance of the Brookmeade colt was in the Grand Union Hotel Stakes, in which he was outrun all the way, so a rest of more than a month was ordered by trainer Robert A. Smith. The next start for the son of Blue Larkspur was in an all-age race at six furlongs at Belmont Park, and he displayed a most creditable performance iri holding Cycle to a half-length triumph, the four-year-old being forced to step the distance over the main course in 1:10. Delphinium carried 100 pounds, eight pounds under scale, whereas Cycles impost was -twenty pounds under and that of Brannon, which finished third, fourteen pounds under. Off of that effort against older horses, Delphinium went into the Belmont Futurity, but he was unable to cope with the leaders, although beaten no more than seven lengths by Tintagel. He was one of the topweights of the field, under 127 pounds, getting weight only from Red Rain and Grand Slam. Delphinium concluded his seasons work with a good performance in the Pimlico Futurity, at a mile and one-sixteenth. Rated back of the pace, he displayed an even effort to finish in fourth place, less than five lengths back of Hollyrood. Although entered in an all-age handicap at Narragansett Park, the Brookmeade colt declined the issue. The record shows Delphinium to have been one of the better two-year-olds of last season, but it does not particularly suggest staying ability, and he will have to display considerable improvement to b a factor in the coming three-year-old attractions. He is bred along popular American lines, the top lines of both his sire and dam having Peter Pan as a grandsire. Delphinium crosses to North Star HI. through his sire and to Broomstick through his dam. His half-brother, Helianthus, by Sun Flag, was a very shifty sprinter. Peter Pan ..
