j LAT0NIA TURF NOTES $ Olin Johnson, trainer of the J. C. Ellis stable, announced that he had the firing irons applied to the two-year-old Sweeping Dam and Onco Sweep, both by Sweep On. They will be out of training for some time. Jockey A. Morgan is leaving for Detroit, where on Saturday he will fill a riding engagement astride the Long Run Stables Marynell. Morgan will return Sunday and be ready to accept mounts at Latonia on Monday. George Vance has taken over the engagement books of jockey Melvin Lewis, who will essay a comeback this season after a long lay-off from the saddle, and apprentice W. Lyons, who made his riding debut at Churchill Downs. Clifford Hufnagel, former jockey, has been appointed custodian of the jockeys quarters at Latonia, succeeding Freddie Burton, who will leave here Saturday night for Charles Town, W. Va. Burton will serve as racing secretary at the meeting to be conducted at Charles Town. S. S. Gano checked in this morning from Louisville with a trio of performers consisting of Judge Barkley, John Allen and Pienny. John Allen and Prenny are two-year-olds, the latter racing in the interest of Gano and J. E. Glass. J. P. Hall, who is conditioning Airforce for the 5,000 Latonia Derby, also has Little Empress, two-year-old daughter of Kai-Sang and Helen Drake, and the three-year-old Oriental Miss, a full sister to the juvenile. Former jockey Bert Kennedy registered the horses he brought here from Louisville. They are owned by the Char-Lei Stable and are Ncssus, Tuccia, Moandmo, Whither, and Whew. The local riding contingent includes the names of twenty-three, with many more due for the opening Saturday. Former jockey Heinie Cavanaugh, who for many years campaigned a string of horses throughout the country with marked success, ranking among the leading trainers, is rather optimistic about the four two-year-olds he has here for Dr. Miller T. Nelsen, of Tacoma, Wash. The juveniles are the progeny of the sires Aerial, Wise Counsellor, Emissary and Broadway Jones. L. O. Sawyer, who has been absent from the trainers ranks for the past two years, plans to return to racing and will endeavor to obtain some horses and conduct a public stable.
