SOPHIST, outrun during the opening five-sixteenths, moved up stoutly on the outside thereafter, came wide, into the stretch and, closing with good speed, wore down the leaders to win going away. HIGH FINANCE, in nearest pursuit of the pace, assumed a brief lead when JOHNNY BANE began to tire and, despite holding on willingly, was no match for the winner. VESTED POWER, outrun for the first half mile, closed with a belated rush through the stretch. SEEDLING made up some ground, but was never able to endanger the leaders. JOHNNY BANE had keen early speed and quit after going a half mile. SCOTCH QUEEN was never a serious threat. ARGOAN had speed for three-eighths. GALIA was buffeted about nearing the far turn and was forced to take up sharply and had no chance thereafter. GRIMALDI. raced to the front in the opening strides, soon drew clear and, steadied along in advance of his field, was never seriously menaced, but was under vigorous hand riding to the end. ROBINS COVE, prominent all the way, continued willingly to the close, but was unable to reach the leader. DIRECT came stoutly on the outside through the last three-sixteenths. TOOTHPICK was going willingly at the end. COPO closed some ground. FORTUITY, hard ridden in an effort to reach the leader, faltered in the last three-sixteenths. GIFT OF ROSES, well placed, was unable to improve her position under pressure. JESSIE D. M. displayed good speed in pacemaking, faltering badly in the last eighth. BALCONY, in close quarters early, was never able to reach contention. LEONARD WILSON was outrun. FAKE was in a contending position on the inside when she stumbled and unseated her rider. ROMAN SOLDIER, confidently ridden, was taken back in the run down the back stretch, moved up fast on the inside rounding from the back stretch, came to the outside in the stretch and, wearing down IDENTIFY, outlasted the latter at the end. IDENTIFY drew clear in the run to the first turn, was rated along in front under steadying restraint and held on willingly in the closing test. BLACK GIFT, restrained early, moved up gamely and continued with good courage to the close. ROUSTABOUT, well placed, was put under pressure after going the first three-quarters and was unable to improve his position, dropping back in the stretch run. NEW DEAL worked his way up steadily, though unable to reach the leaders. DARK HOPE was well placed, but retired after going five-eighths. Overweight New DcaL.l pound; Gov. The latter, blocked repeatedly in the running, was unable to threaten the leaders when gaining clear sailing! through the last quarter mile. GLYNSON had early speed, but was unable to keep up.
