THREE-YEAR -OLD PROSPECTS OF 1937 REAPING REWARD, brown colt, by Sickle Dustwhirl; property of the Milky Way Farm of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars of Chicago. He was a close runner-up for the juvenile honors of 1936 chiefly because of his defeat of Pompoon in the New England Futurity and of Privileged in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. He is well thought of and one of the choices for the Kentucky Derby. By NORRIS HOYDEN ---- ...... t The end of a long, gruelling campaign found Reaping Reward generally acknowledged as the second best two-year-old of last season and one of the foremost candidates for honors in his division during 1937, primarily because of his victory over Pompoon in the New England Futurity and over Privileged in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, both efforts showing him to be a colt of much quality with a disposition to go a distance.- Called upon to race fifteen times beginning in January at Santa Anita, Reaping Reward may have been better off had his debut been delayed until late in the summer. Unplaced twice at Santa Anita and beaten a length by Heelfly at Arlington Downs, the brown son of Sickle and Dustwhirl graduated in a maiden effort at four and one-half furlongs at Churchill Downs over Prairie Dog and others. He then was beaten off in two later contests at the Louisville track before scoring an easy victory in an allowance issue at Hawthorne, in which he defeated Mondorf by three lengths, with Par third. Shipped to Detroit for a stakes, he was outrun throughout, with Miss Dolphin the winner, and then he displayed the same sort of an effort in the Hyde Park Stakes at Arlington Park, which his stablemate, Nations Taste, won. Meeting a smaller field in a six furlongs overnight race at the same track, he obtained a better position in the early running and finished second to Bottle Cap, which beat him three lengths in the time of 1:12. Trainer Robert McGarvey was well convinced of his quality, however, and shipped him ahead to Saratoga Springs to start in the United States Hotel Stakes, while Case Ace remained behind for the Arlington Futurity. Both colts were victorious, the Sickle colt closing steadily in the final quarter to score by two and one-half lengths over Savage as Forty Winks was third. His time was 1:12 for the three-quarters. Forty Winks came out of that effort to take the Saratoga Special. Forced out of training after that race, Reaping Reward did not run again until a six furlongs dash over the straightaway at Belmont Park in preparation for the Futurity. Assigned 122 pounds, he was unable to make trouble as Camisado proved the winner, with Magic Circle second, and Flying Cross third. McGarvey held him out of the Futurity, but whipped him back into good condition for the New England Futurity at Narragansett Park a month later. Turning into the stretch with the others far behind. Reaping Reward rushed up to take a half length lead over Pompoon, and then to beat out that colt by a neck in the creditable time of 1:41 for the mile and seventy yards. His Impost was 117 pounds, five less than was carried by Pompoon, but his performance was remarkable enough just the same. Shipped to Churchill Downs, where a slow track prevailed for the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, the Milky Way Farm colt was last in the early stages, but he settled into his stride on the turn to be a length back of Privileged with a furlong to go. Continuing his advance, he took the lead a sixteenth out to defeat the Calumet youngster by a length as Dellor was third, and his stablemate, Murph, was fourth. Privileged was fresh from his effort in the Pimlico Futurity, in which he finished first. After a winters rest at the farm in Tennessee, he is now preparing for the Kentucky Derby. Reaping Reward is by Sickle, which so far has sired such distance runners as Brevity and Agrarian in this country, and his dam is. Dustwhirl, by Sweep; she, a half-sister to Brevity and Osmond. Therefore Reaping Reward is bred similarly to Brevity. Dustwhirl was from Ormonda, by Superman, a speed cross, with stamina being added by the third dam, Princess Ormonde, by Ormondale. Reaping Reward runs like a stayer. He can carry weight and his quality is established. His claim for top honors this season is to be respected.
