HOLMES ASSUMES POSITION Agua Calientes New Bacing Secretary Arrives on Scene of His Future Activities. AGUA CALIENTE, Mexico, April 7. A veteran of racing, Benjamin Holmes today began his duties as racing secretary for the Agua Caliente Turf Club, which opens Its season May 8. Holmes arrived here last night from Florida, where he had been working with Jack Campbell, who officiates as racing secretary in New York, Maryland and Florida. While this is the first time Holmes has held an official position at a western track, he was practically raised in California, and his turf experience goes back to the old days of Emeryville, Ascot Park, and "Lucky" Baldwins Santa Anita. For many years Holmes has officiated at different eastern courses and more recently at Suffolk Downs and Narragansett Park. Losing no time in taking up his work here. Holmes was conferring today with Harry Nelson, member of the Caliente Board of Stewards, on the numerous applications for stabling. When Holmes becomes acquainted, with the thoroughbred material at hand he will prepare his first condition book.
