NINETEEN REMAIN AS PROBABLE DERBY STARTERS Milky Way Farm Stable May Start Case Ace in Entry 4 War Admiral Continues to Reign as Favorite for Satur ¬ days Big Race Heelfly Again Carries Off OffMorning Morning Workout Honors LOUISVILLE Ky May 5 With due allowances for possible sickness or injury however remote nineteen horses representing seventeen in ¬ terests and including all the outstanding threeyearolds will start in the sixtythird annual Kentucky Derby which is expected to be decided before a record crowd at Churchill Downs here Saturday Should this number strive for the glory and gold of Americas premier turf event it will be the largest field since 1932 when twenty met over the sinewtesting mile and a quarter and only three below the record of twentytwo which competed LATEST DERBY FORECAST LOUISVILLE Ky May 5 The latest forecast of the field for the sixtythird Kentucky Derby next Satur ¬ day has twentytwo probable starters all but three being designated certain to go to the fNot expected to start in the fixture hack in 1928 With nineteen starting the purse will be one of the richest in the record of the prized classic the monetary monetarygross gross value amounting to 61075 exclusive of the valuable gold trophy which goes to the winning owner ownerIndications Indications that the stable of Mrs Ethel V Mars will rely on an entry of three horses instead of only Reaping Reward and Mili ¬ tary as heretofore and unofficial expres ¬ sions that Gerald owned by Mrs Mars daughter Mrs William H Furst would not be a contestant were the principal develop ¬ ments of the last twentyfour hours The third Mars starter should trainer Robert McGarvey finally decide on an entry of three will be Case Ace which scored a handy victory here on opening day last Saturday SaturdayGERALDS GERALDS HEELS SORE SOREIt It was learned that the Furst stable only awaited the approval of Mrs Furst before formally withdrawing Gerald whose traing was disrupted about ten days ago when he developed sore heels heelsMeanwhile Meanwhile War Admiral Samuel D Rid ¬ dles eastern candidate continues as the reigning favorite in what generally is re ¬ garded as one of the most open affairs in the long glamorous history of the Derby The feeling that no one horse or any partic ¬ ular group of them have a corner on the race became more general following the running here yesterday of the Trial Purse in which James W Parrishs Kentucky entry Dellor turned back a field of Derby eligibles which included Reaping Reward a choice in the winter book betting but the only horse among the nineteen probable starters that has not been seen under colors as a threeyearold before filling Tuesdays engagement engagementPerhaps Perhaps War Admirals chief claim to fa ¬ voritism is the fact that he has not met de ¬ feat this year winning two engagements while every single one among the others has been vanquished at least once during the current season War Admiral however has yet to encounter many of the generally re ¬ garded stronger colts he must conquer to add his name to the roll of Derby winners As all of them will oppose the Riddle horse Saturday his preference as public choice is not pronounced Continued on twentyeighth page NINETEEN REMAIN AS PROBABLE DERBY STARTERS Continued from first page In addition to the Mars horses War Ad ¬ miral and Dellor the Derby field also is expected to embrace Mrs H C Phipps Melodist Marshall Fields Sir Damion Max ¬ well Howards Sceneshifter E Paul and Guy L Waggoners Heelfly William DuPont Jrs Fairy Hill Townsend B Martins Court Scandal this trio as starters would not surprise although indica ¬ tions at this time are that they will be on the sidelines as the race is staged stagedREPRESENTATIVE REPRESENTATIVE FIELD FIELDThe The Derby field probably is one of the most representative in years for from a standpoint of turf prominence it will include the colors of many of the countrys most fashionable stables Furthermore as an in ¬ dication of its quality it will embrace the winners of the most important stakes for threeyearolds decided this year Last Satur ¬ day Melodist forged his way into the Derby picture when he accounted for the historic Wood Memorial Stakes at Jamaica while a week before the Chesapeake Stakes at Havre do Grace went to War Admiral the son of Man o War registering with decisiveness to clinch a place in the Derby field Earlier Court Scandal captured the Flamingo Stakes at Hialeah and Fairy Hill the Santa Anita Derby in California CaliforniaExcept Except for Melodist and Merry Maker the important a single training session since Derby preparation started here Once more Heelfly the Texas hope carried off speed honors The Waggoner horse also Sir Da ¬ mion and Clodion were set down over the Derby route with the Wggoner horse run ¬ ning the distance on a slow track in 206 against 212 by Sir Damion and 213 by Clodion Pompoon working after the track had become muddy as a result of a hard hardiin iin which developed after intermittent driz ¬ zles early in the day reeled off a mile in 142 galloping out an additional quarter in 210 210Sceneshifter Sceneshifter and Fencing were put through a snappy threequarters in company the former in 113 and the latter in 113 while Case Ace travelled a mile in 142 Court Scandal a similar distance at little more than an open gallop in 159 and Sun ¬ set Trail II four furlongs in 51 51As As a prelude to his final long work to ¬ morrow Merry Maker went a half mile in 49 Others of the probable starters ex ¬ cept several under colors for the Trial Purse yesterday had long gallops gallopsSENSATIONAL SENSATIONAL TRIAL TRIALComing Coming back in even more sensational fashion than last Sunday when he blazed past War Admiral while the two were hav ¬ ing one of their more important tests Heel fly had almost the whole Downs colony for an audience while jockey A Craig directed him through as sparkling a performance as any Derby horse has shown here or else ¬ where in years Going into action at the furlong post the son of Royal Ford per ¬ formed at a fast and steady pace the first quarter in 24 threeeighths in 36 half mile in 49 threequarters in 114 the mile in 139 and the mile and an eighth in 153 As he never was extended he accomplished the performance with much in reserve reserveAs As rain was coming down heavily when Pompoon came on the track about 930 thi Louchheim star and last years juvenilo champion had his rehearsal before only a scattering of onlookers Nevertheless tho son of Pompey worked splendidly his mile in 142 being accomplished over a track deep with loose mud For the quarter he was timed in 24 while the half was covered in 49 threequarters in 115 and seven eighths in 128 His private test was in ¬ augurated at the sixteenth post and after circling the mile course he galloped out nine furlongs in 156 and the Derby route in 210 He also ran well within himself and the move was enough to indicate that he conies up to his Derby engagement in good fashion fashionSIR SIR DAMION SLOWLY SLOWLYSir Sir Damions move was at a slow easy pace the Fields horse going the first half in 51 threequarters in 117 and a mile in 144 while Clodion performed in iden ¬ tical fashion The Carter horse completed the opening half mile in 50 reached the threequarter marker in 116 and rounded out eight furlongs in 145 145The The Howard combination of Sceneshifter and Fencing faced a different program On the course very early they whizzed through a fast threequarters in company well before the days training activity was fully under way Starting at the threequarters post they opened with a quarter in 23 finished four furlongs in 47 and in the third and last quarter mile Sceneshifter drew slightly away to complete the distance in 113 against 113 for his stablemate Both were under pressure pressureWhile While not called upon for his highest speed Case Ace had a rather stiff prep as he reeled off the first quarter in 25 and then picked up speed to do a half mile in 50 but required more time for the next quarter to round out six furlongs in 116 following which he finished the move with a quarter in 26 26Evidently Evidently realizing the openness of the race also for the purpose of injecting more early speed or pace into the contest trainer McGarvey may be motivated by a dual pur ¬ pose in seriously considering Case Aces en ¬ try in the Derby The colt is one of the fastest racing at this time and would be certain to either cut out or force a terrific early pace which would work to the ad ¬ vantage of his two stable companions Reap ¬ ing Reward and Military Should this plan be carried out McGarvey may put Charles Corbett back on Military which he rode in the Trial yesterday and get another rider for Alfred Robertson having the assignment on Reaping Reward RewardWith With the stage set and the personnel of the race pretty well defined thousands of visitors are beginning to throng to the city for the Derby Their presence is seen in the large attendance daily since the local meeting got under way last Saturday and hotels are filling rapidly The increase in the number of early arrivals over last year indicates one of the largest if not the largest crowd ever to see the race
