SKY LARKING TRIUMPHS Overcomes Interference to Score in Historic Bashford Manor Carries Scale Weight of 122 Pounds Poundsand and Runs Five Furlongs in inMud Mud in 101 35 LOUISVILLE Ky May 5 Mrs Ethel V Mars Milky Way Farm stable scored its second straight victory in the Bashford Manor Stakes this afternoon when Sky Lark ¬ ing defeated eight other good twoyearold prospects in the thirtysixth running of the historic Churchill Downs event Overcoming considerable trouble soon after the start the bay son of Blue Larkspur and Risk wore down the Valdina Farms Teddys Comet in the final furlong to win by threequarters of a length as Knee Deep property of James W Parrish was three lengths away in third place Sky Larking for which Mrs Mars paid 13500 at the Saratoga yearling sales last August and which graduated at the first asking here last Saturday earned 5460 in duplicating the 1936 triumph of Murph He carried scale weight of 122 pounds and ran the five furlongs over a muddy track in 101 101Right Right after the start of the Bashford Manor Charles Corbett permitted Green Bot ¬ tle to come over sharply causing Roy T to impede Sky Larking to such an extent that Robertson was compelled to take up his mount abruptly The field was half way around the turn before the Blue Larkspur colt was back in his stride and he set about the task of overtaking the leaders Green Bottle was unable to hold his advantage very long as Teddys Comet moved up quickly on the outside to give him battle while Lassator which was coupled with Roy T and Teddys Comet as the Valdina entry was close by on the inside Teddys Comet turned into the stretch with what appeared to be a winning margin George Woolf saving as much ground as possible as soon as his mount was clear Sky Larking gained readily under Robert ¬ sons strong handling and he was in second place two lengths back of Teddys Comet entering the final furlong ROBERTSONS HARD RIDE RIDEContinuing Continuing his advance the Milky Way colt overtook the Valdina youngster with a sixteenth to go and after a short brush gradually drew away as Robertson kept after him with all his strength Knee Deep came from well back to be third as Fantine took the lead right after the start and showing a marked liking for the go ¬ ing was never headed winning by four lengths over Labor Day owned by the Three Ds Stock Farm as the Greentree Stables Lourdes was another length and a half back and ahalf length before Spicebox SpiceboxATINA ATINA IN EASY STYLE STYLEAtina Atina took the second race by two and a half lengths over Miss Adams as Sailor man was another head away Top Glide was fourth among the eight plater three yearolds meeting over six furlongs Sailor man had the most early speed but under brisk urging from Robert Dotter Atina moved up on the inside to engage him leav ¬ ing the back stretch Upon reaching the stretch the black daughter of Broadside and Margate took the lead and gradually drew away under relentless driving Sailor man swerved while tiring and Miss Adams gained gradually on the outside to gain place honors honorsLord Lord Walton owned by Dan Lehan and jockey Glen Fowler made up a winning combination in the third race The fouryear old Harry Baker gelding moved to the front and then continued to draw away from his company until at the end he was four lengths in front of his nearest rival Red Go as Drombo the favorite finished third six more lengths back Lord Dalton paid 7980 and those who coupled him in Daily Double combinations with Atina received 22820 Geo Gable was fourth in the field of eight eightPANDISCO PANDISCO WELL BACKED BACKEDThe The Woolford Farm stable one of the larg ¬ est here provided the winner of the fourth race in which the wellbacked Pandisco handled by apprentice Sammy Roberts easily turned back seven other threeyearolds Georgia Meaden accounted for second hon ¬ ors while Baste was third Pandisco a daughter of the young stallion Insco took command immediately and opening up a sizable lead early was never seriously threat ¬ ened At the end she was four lengths in front of Georgia Meaden which in turn beat Baste a length and a half for second place Dixie Boot led the others to the wire wireThe The Tranquillity Farms Wild Turkey be ¬ came the fourth favorite of the afternoon to score when she accounted for the mile Shelbyville Handicap for grade C per ¬ formers which was offered as the fifth event With Basil James up the sixyear old Hourless mare moved to the front ap ¬ proaching the home stretch and won easily by a length and a half Second money fell to First Entry while Tedall was third
