DIXIANA ENTRY DOMINATES Finish First and Second in Jeanne DArc Stakes High Maria Outfinishes Stablemate Petes Niece at Narragansett Park Spindle top Runs Disappointingly PAWTUCKET R I May 5 The silks of Dixiana which has one of the largest stables on the Narragansett grounds were carried to first and second place in the 2 500 added Jeanne DArc Stakes a four and a half furlongs sprint for juvenile fillies which featured a windy day of sport at Wal ¬ ter OHaras track beside the Seekonk The Dixiana horses were far superior to their six rivals High Maria won the event hand ¬ ily by a length and a half and her stable mate Petes Niece was two lengths clear of W W Adams Blue Grotto Bill Gallagh ¬ ers Miss Apprehend finished fourth and Spindletop a hot choice could do no better than fifth fifthHigh High Maria began fast and swept to a long lead immediately under Charley Stevenson The Vander Pool filly Lilith also left the barrier fast and pursued the pacemaker closely down the back stretch with Petes Niece third Lilith appeared short and be ¬ gan to display distress signals midway on the turn As they straightened out the Dixiana silks were well in advance of all rivals with Lilith having quit and Blue Grotto moving up to third place placeHigh High Maria was under slight urging in the stretch to keep ahead of her fast charg ¬ ing stablemate At the eighth post it was evident that nothing would catch the two young ladies from Dixiana Farm FarmBLUE BLUE GROTTO GAMELY GAMELYBlue Blue Grotto ran a good race and a game one and should improve off it Lilith showed early speed and should also do better in her next Spindletop winner here the other day never was seriously in the hunt The time was 53 with the horses facing a strong head wind in the stretch stretchThe The day was sunny and warm but a high wind swept over the course all afternoon I forcing folks to keep a tight hold on their I hats hatsThe The filly stake was one of two features on the excellent midweek card arranged by secretary Pat Horgan HorganDixiana Dixiana just missed winning both ends of the dual feature Miss Anita Doris Lady Higloss showing a greatly improved per ¬ formance over her Narragansett Handicap effort drove up in the final yards to beat Erin Torch by a neck in the Bridgeport j Purse The latter was one of the numerous overlays of the session showing 12 to 1 on the tote board At the end he was a head j clear of the 4 to 5 choice Zoic which the I public made a ridiculously short priced I horse There was a dead heat for fourth between Blind Pig and Reaping Miss Prudence and Erin Torch were coupled under the Dixiana jacket jacketThe The best thing of the meeting to date got home in the mile and onesixteenth seventh when Sir Rollie which had been racing at long prices all last year and which had i started but once this year under a sparkling j I riding exhibition by Tommy Luther defeated i Stone Martin by a neck The winner was j always well up in the running and chal lenged Stone Martin which had set all the I pace late in the stretch and Luther plainly 1 outrode young Johnny Barba to get to the front in the final few strides
