Here and There on the Turf Dellor Qualifies Handsomely Race Will Benefit Reaping Re ¬ ward wardSeveral Several Candidates Eliminated Normile Reopens Agua Galiente Churchill Downs held its Trial Purse Tuesday and as expected it determined to a large extent the socalled western bid for Saturdays renewal of the Kentucky Derby The winner turned up in Dellor brown son of Rolled Stocking and Gossip Avenue from the stable of James W Parrish elderly banker tobacco grower and sportsman of Midway Ky whose principal ambition at the moment is a victory in the Kentucky Derby With the track slow a condition he obviously liked Dellor ran the mile in 138 to defeat Reaping Reward until then the outstanding western candidate for the Derby by a length Dellor won easily while Reap ¬ ing Reward was all out but the Parrish colt had eight pounds in his favor in the weights and the obvious benefit of seasoning gained from racing in Florida and at Keeneland Despite these advantages in favor of Dellor the colt performed much more impressively than Reaping Reward and the others in the race because Basil James had him under strong restraint at the finish finishShould Should the Churchill Downs track be in an off condition Saturday Dellor is almost certain to come in for extensive support if for no other reason than he shapes up as the outstanding Kentucky hope for the con test His connections however state their candidate will not be caught at a disadvan ¬ tage if the track is fast although they admit that Dellors chances improve with water on the track They further add that Dellor which does not give freely of his speed in the morning was lacking in condition in the Ben Ali Handicap at Keeneland won by Count Morse and that effort put him right for his engagement in the Trial which in turn sends him into the Derby in tiptop condition Dellor was called upon to give Count Morse which later won the Clark Handicap weight on the scale just as he did the other starters in the Widener Challenge Cup in which he finished third to Colum biana and Finance FinanceRobert Robert McGarvey trainer of the Milky Way Farm stable also remarked that the Trial was just what Reaping Reward and Military required to be in readiness for Sat ¬ urdays running of the classic This view also was shared by A L Miller the condi tioner of Bernard F and Miss Mary Hirsch owner and trainer of No Sir They finished third and sixth respectively However Bert Williams trainer of Gerald was of the opin ion that Mrs William H Fursts colt was in need of even another workout to be right for the Derby and it will not be surprising if the son of Pharamond H is an absentee on Saturday All of the other starters in the Trial which were Main Man Lake View Josh Albubble Gosum asd Galsun were eliminated from the race and their various handlers admitted the fact factThe The Derby became more open than ever with the running of the Trial although War Admiral continues an undisputed favorite because of the fact that he is unbeaten in hjs two starts this season including his galloping triumph In the Chesapeake Stakes StakesA A conclusive victory by Reaping Reward co jj f oiFico ri in the Trial might have made a difference in this respect Many close observers how ¬ ever still wonder whether the medium sized Man q War colt will be able to carry the carrythe Derby impost of 126 pounds over the mile and a quarter distance althdugh they do not doubt his promise of staying powers They point out that War Admiral was able to take the track in his winning races but 1 that in the Derby he ill be meeting several t ti i tui j anii 5 ril horses which might be able to outrun him in the early stages Notably among these la Heelfly k Continued on twenty eventh nysel HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF plans well in hand for the reopening of Agua Caliente Saturday For two years the plant has been closed brought about by the presidential decree from Mexico City ban ¬ ning gambling games In the rejuvenation of the plant and plans for a long season the intrepid Normile has proceeded on the theory that the racing will stand on its own legs and that without the gambling games it will have much
