CADEAU 11 EASILY TRIUMPHS FrenchBred Jumper Carries Mrs F A Clarks Colors to Victory Scores in First Subscription Steeplechase SteeplechaseDefeating Defeating Lord Jenkis and Valpul Valpulseaux seaux by Wide Margin BALTIMORE Md May 5 Cadeau II a strapping fiveyearold Frenchbred jumper carrying the noted colors of Mrs F Ambrose Clark easily defeated nine other imported horses making their first start in America in the inaugural running of the Subscription Steeplechase the two miles field feature at Pimlico this afternoon Dis ¬ playing good speed on the flat and jumping soundly the bay son of Nouvel anCrederes Victos was not fully extended to finish eight lengths in advance of the Raritan Stables Lord Jenkis Two lengths back of the latter Walter Wickes Valpuiseaux was third thirdPimlicos Pimlicos old clubhouse was thronged with members of the steeplechase and hunt col ¬ onies to watch the running of the Subscrip ¬ tion the first of five events to be run this season for the thirtysix imported jumpers brought to America from France and Eng ¬ land by a syndicate of American sportsmen and sportswomen sportswomenSponsored Sponsored by Frank J Bryan a leader of the steeplechase and hunt set and racing secretary at Old Hill Top the Subscription steeplechases will be run in the spring and fall at Pimlico with one event at Belmont Park one at Saratoga and the fifth at Aque ¬ duct The consignment of foreign jumpers arrived in this country during the winter months and the members of the syndicate drew for them by lot lotPRESENT PRESENT PIECE OF PLATE PLATEA A piece of silver plate was presented to Mrs Clark and a trophy was given to the i i winning rider jockey H Clements after the running of the race Added to the associa ¬ tions purse of 1000 was a prize of 2000 donated by the syndicates subscription fund the winning owner receiving 2500 as her share for Cadeau Hs fine effort effortA A C Comptons Weston came from far back to overtake Airflame the early leader for a victory in the class A division of the graded handicaps at six furlongs Far back during the opening three furlongs Weston charged on Airflame which had opened a commanding lead and overhauled the latter just inside the final furlong post The Compton sprinter was a length and one half in the van passing the judges Higher Cloud within striking distance all the way was a smoothrunning third a length back of the place horse Sunned outgamed Billy Bee for the fourth portion of the purse purseALWAYS ALWAYS IN FRONT FRONTCadeau Cadeau II was always in front taking command after racing threequarters and steadily edging into his winning margin of eight lengths in the final five furlongs The French jumper was never under serious pressure after taking command and though shaken up after clearing the last jump he was just galloping at the end His time was 356 over va fast course while Inceptions track record for the distance at Pimlico is 344 The winner was the favorite in a mild wagering race raceLord Lord Jenkis followed the leaders after the first half mile and was under mild urging to hold the evenrunning Valpuiseaux safe for third thirdJohn John Hay Whitneys Antonia II refused to break when starter James Milton dropped the flag to an otherwise flawless start Casa ¬ nova hobbled at the first two jumps and after the second fence ran out of the course Razy sprinted into the lead from the start but lost his rider after clearing the sixth fence fenceYOUNGSTER YOUNGSTER ON WINNER WINNERLittle Little John Mattison a seventeenyearold apprentice from Woodlawn Md donned racing silks for the first time on Alahad racing for his contract employer J P Jones and piloted the filly to an easy vie tory in the mile and a sixteenth third race a test for threeyearolds which had not won in 1937 Both rider and horse were maidens and it was a double graduation Outrunning graduationOutrunning his field in a startling burst of speed William Elders threeyearold Royal Rank romped home a six lengths winner of the class C event in the graded handicap of six furlongs Rushed Into a long lead from the start by the veteran Charley Kurtsinger the Sir James gelding finished as his rider pleased San Antioca which was woefully lacking in speed for the first three furlongs came on the outside through the stretch to charge into second place a length and a half in advance of the aged Cruising
