JIMMIE CABANISS SURPRISES Unexpectedly Wins Sand Marsh Handicap at Jamaica Course Accidents Mar Several Races Shining Sun SunDisappoints Disappoints Host of Backers in inDays Days Feature JAMAICA N Y May 5 J S Rileys Jimmie Cabaniss was a surprise winner of the Sand Marsh Handicap at Jamaica today when in a fighting finish he scored over A D Pratts Sunport with William H Berris Albania a distant third before Night Raven This was a gallop of a mile and sev sult was one of the big surprises of the meeting when Mrs C Oliver Iselins Shin ¬ ing Sun played with unusual confidence finished a bad last of the six that went to the post postWith With no feature race down for decision the card of overnight races brought un ¬ usually close finishes and a big crowd was well entertained though a sudden drop in temperature did not make conditions alto ¬ gether comfortable comfortableIn In this race which held the feature posi ¬ tion on the card it was Night Raven that set the pace and he was closely attended by Merry Pete with Shining Sun racing along outside of the pair of them and ap ¬ parently able to take command at the first asking It was near the three furlongs post that Gilbert shook him up but instead of taking command he tired badly and at once dropped out of contention He continued to drop back until he was last of them all allMAKE MAKE UP GROUND GRADUALLY GRADUALLYMerry Merry Pete and Night Raven also tired and then it was that Sunport loomed up and until a furlong from the finish he looked the winner Jimmie Cabaniss had been well back of the pace but Arcaro made up ground gradually with him and in the final furlong he challenged Sunport to run down the Sun Briar colt and win going away by threequarters of a length Six lengths back of these Albania easily beat Night Raven for third but she was six lengths away from Sunport SunportThere There was plenty of excitement in the opening six furlongs dash for cheap maidens when the camera was called upon to decide the finish between Mrs William Ziegler Jrs Proprietary and Mrs Ethel D Jacobs Wulfstan the decision being made in the order mentioned and then the claiming of a foul After some deliberation the order of the finish was not disturbed The stewards themselves made the foul claim to question the riders no jockey having made a com ¬ plaint RollerCoaster finished a distant third and Glassy Eye from the Paragon Stable was fourth with the others strung out as the result of much crowding at the five furlongs post that resulted in the in ¬ jury of two jockeys M Corona who rode Buddies and C Shultz who had the mount on Petline PetlineHALO HALO HELD TO BLAME BLAMEThe The accident was caused by the piling up otjS horses and the crowding of Buddies into the rail when Halo and Wulfstan came over sharply from outside positions It appeared that Halo was to blame and accordingly Wulfstan was absolved of the blame blameThere There came another accident in the six furlongs o the second when Prevention un ¬ seated Xj Dubois but he fortunately escaped serious injury This resulted in another fighting finish in which Mrs Val Cranes Ewawa earned a close decision over Mark Fators Galon Boy and third went to Flying Centaur that races for the Mill River Sjcable Two of the starters came out oi the race decidedly lame when Galon Boy ahd Merry Fox limped from the weighing enclosure Flopsie caused a long delay at the post and as the field was sent away Social Error was as good as left at the post and Prevention was away badly badlyHALF HALF TIME EASILY The second half of the Sands Point Handicap saw Milo Shields Half Time from California an easy winner over T D Grimes j Top Radio and Mrs W T Andersons Carlo vinian readily took third from Up and Do ¬ ing Half Time was so much the best of this field that he carried all the pace from the f i st stride and Sauter had him under a slight restraint as he cut out a fast pace When the stretch was reached he had his company soundly beaten and he simply gal ¬ loped home the winner by two lengths lengthsThe The third accident of the afternoon occurred when Marfree went down with Eddie Litzenberger when there was a deal of crowding as the horses swung into it This interfered not a little with several in the field and War Stripes and Bright Chance were among those that escaped to go into the lead It was discovered that Litzenberger had suffered two fractures of his left leg The result saw Chrysmute the winner over Bright Chance and third went to Even Up one that had suffered considerably by the mixup on the first turn Then there came a claim of foul after it was all over overAfter After questioning several of the riders and a considerable delay the blame was fixed on Wall who rode Bright Chance and that moved Even Up into second with third going to Wilco and War Stripes was fourth
