TRIO OF DERBY WINNERS Kurtsinger Saunders and Hanford HanfordOnly Only Successful Jockeys in inRace Race Still Biding LOUISVILLE Ky May 7 Although a number of them still are alive there are only three jockeys among the approximate 500 in the profession still plying their voca ¬ tion who have won a Kentucky Derby They are Charles Kurtsinger born a short dis ¬ tance from historic Churchill Downs Willie Saunders a Missouri boy and Ira Hanford who hails from Nebraska NebraskaKurtsinger Kurtsinger the bespectacled young man who ranks among the foremost riders of the country realized his lifelong ambition when he won the Derby astride Mrs Payne Whit ¬ neys Twenty Grand in 1931 Saunders piloted William Woodwards Omaha to a Kentucky Derby triumph in 1935 while only last year Hanford at the time an apprentice jockey drove Morton L Schwartz Bold Venture to a thrilling score in the turf classic classicMany Many former jockeys who won the Derby still are associated with the sport as train ¬ ers or in other capacities Among them is Roscoe Goose who rode Donerail to his up ¬ set triumph in the Derby of 1913 Another is Alfred Johnson who conditions a Califor ¬ nia stable Johnson won the Derby twice first in 1922 with Morvich and in 1926 with Bubbling Over Then there is Earl Sande one of the only two riders who ever won the Kentucky Derby three times He won it in 1923 with Zev in 1925 with Flying Ebony and five years later with the great Gallant Fox The only other rider ever to handle three Derby winners was the colored jockey Isaac Murphy whose winners were Buchan ¬ an in 1884 Riley in 1890 and Kingman in 1891 1891Other Other former jockeys who won the famous Churchill Downs race and who now are trainers include Johnny Loftus who won with Regret in 1915 and with George Smith two years later and J D Mooney who whipped his way to fame with the ebony meteor Black Gold in 1924 1924A A few more are still alive to tell of their greatest thrill but only three remain who can experience the thrill once more
