OMAHAS UNIQUE DISTINCTION Only Derby Winner Still in Training Preparing for Another AnotherEnglish English Campaign LOUISVILLE Ky May 7 It is a curious fact but only one Kentucky Derby winner still is in competition and that one is not campaigning in America The lone excep ¬ tion is William Woodwards Omaha the son of a former Kentucky Derby winner Gal ¬ lant Fox and he is racing in England Omaha won the Derby of two years ago and he is alone among the Derby winners of the last fifteen years which have been able to stand the rigors of early threeyearold train ¬ ing and still be actively engaged in competi ¬ tion Several of the last fifteen Derby win ¬ ners were retired for breeding purposes at the conclusion of their threeyearold cam ¬ paigns paignsLast Last years Derby winner Bold Venture has been retired to the stud and so have the winners those of them exclusive of geldings which still are alive of years prior to Omahas Other recent winners also in the stud include Cavalcade Brokers Tip Burgoo King and Reigh Count CountThe The hardiest horse ever to win the Derby probably was Exterminator though Derby winners almost without exception enjoy long life Exterminator not only survived the exacting training for the Louisville race but campaigned regularly until he was ten and became affectionately known as Old Bones Being a gelding he couldnt per ¬ petuate the qualities of speed and endurance which coursed through his veins veinsIts Its just a guess whether this years Derby winner will survive the ordeal and continue to race through another season or longer but on the record he may look forward to longevity as only two of the last twenty winners fail to answer rollcalL
