Incoming Closes Fast to Down Itabo In Final Stride of Narragansett Test Continues Run of Upsets to I Take Featured Gaspee Purse By Hose Favored Navy Third ThirdPAWTUCKET PAWTUCKET R I May 5 In an afternoon marked by numerous upsets Mrs D B Millers Incoming finished in resolute fashion to defeat Itabo from the J H Miles string another outsider by the scant margin of a nose at the close of the one mile and seventy yards of the Gaspee Purse This allowance offering bringing together a field of seven headlined the midweek program at Narragansett Park ParkC C P Sowers Navy the favorite In the Gaspee wile racing in the forefront from the beginning was forced to be content with third place placeFor For the first time since the meeting opened ideal conditions prevailed with the result that one of the biggest weekday throngs was in attendance attendanceFrom From the start it was Itabo who took up the running attended closest by Capt Cau ¬ tion while Navy raced in advance of the others Going into the back stretch incom ¬ ing showed before but two of the field Itabo continued to race out in front down the back stretch increasing his lead until he had daylight showing over his closest rival Navy and Capt Caution racing heads apart still chased closest after the leader leaderCloses Closes In on Leaders LeadersIncoming Incoming had started to move up and raced in the middle of the pack The Miles fiveyearold had been good enough to stave off a challenge from Navy and still held to a lead of better than a length Incoming had worn down Capt Caution and began closing on the leaders Appren ¬ tice Williams had Navy under a drive but the Annapolis sevenyearold was unable to improve his position positionIncoming Incoming moved within a length of the pacesetting Itabo soon after straightening out in the stretch Claggett had Itabo under pressure and the Bold Venture five yearold fought it out gamely However Incoming was not to be denied and closing the gap that separated him from the leader managed to get up in the conclud ¬ ing stride It was a worthwhile achievement on the part of Incoming when he picked up five pounds overweight to make his impost 110 pounds and sped over the distance in 143 His score was a surprise and he returned 3120
