Weight Stars and Stripes Candidates Honor Whirlaway With Top Impost Devil Diver, Shut Out Get 124 Pounds for Arlingtons 0,000 Holiday Fixture HOMEWOOD, 111., June 28.— Though he will be missing when the field is called postward, Calumet Farms Whirlaway, whose permanent retirement from racing was announced today, was honored with top weight for the 0,000 Stars and Stripes Handicap, which will be renewed as the feature of the War Relief program at Washington Park on Monday. The 1942 handicap champion, whose withdrawal from the racing scene was prompted by a filled left foreleg, was allotted 128 pounds, four more than the 124 placed on the Greentree Stables four-year-old. Devil Diver, an Shut Out. Bracketed at 116 each are Attention, for | which William Helis of New Orleans paid 5,000 at auction recently; Valdina Farms Irish-bred Rounders, conqueror of Whirl-awaj in the Arlington Handicap last year; Coward and Du Puys Marriage, who beat Alsab in the Washington Park Handicap last Labor Day, and A. C. Ernsts greatly improved Aletern, hero of the early season racing in the Chicago area. Weights for the 29 nominees range from Whirlaways 128 down to the 100 pounds assigned to T. D. Buhls Sweep Swinger. The main division of the Greentree Stable, including Devil Diver, winner of last Saturdays Brooklyn Handicap at Aqueduct, The Rhymer and perhaps Shut Out. who finished fourth in the Brooklyn, after encountering numerous difficulties, are expected tomorrow at Washington Park. Aid War Relief and Charities Proceeds of Arlington Parks July 5 program at Washington Park will be contributed to war relief agencies and charities after the manner of the Fourth of July program at the North Side track last year, when Arlington Park was the first racing association in America to offer its best day to the war cause, Army and Navy relief organizations being the beneficiaries. The Stars and Stripes Handicap is the first of the five 0,000 added events to be run during the current Arlington-Washington Park meeting, the others being the Arlington-Washington Park Handicaps and the famous three-year-old fixtures, the Classic and the American Derby. • Best Seller, from the Galbreath and Dienst stable of Columbus, Ohio, who won the Equipoise Mile Saturday for the second consecutive time, was assigned 115 pounds for the Stars and Stripes. Valdina Farms Valdina Orphan and Whirlaways stable-mate, Sun Again, were similarly weighted. The Stars and Stripes Handicap, Arlington Parks traditional Fourth of July fixture, has a brilliant history of fourteen previous runnings. Its roster of winners includes Col. E. R.
