JiS* SS "* Sand3andSand8andand »■ " " • • -II — I I "" HIALEAH BUYS FIRE TRUCK— The modern fire-fighting truck shown here was delivered recently to Hialeah Park. The track is believed to be the first in the country to purchase a standard fire engine. The new apparatus has a 500-gallon booster tank and will be put into immediate service. The two-stage centrifugal pump will feed three two-and-one-half-inch hoses at the same time and throws a stream of water the length of one of the Hialeah barns. A crew of firemen will be maintained from November to April 20 while thoroughbreds are stabled at the track for winter racing. The engine, purchased from the Oren Fire Apparatus Company of Roanoke, Va., at a cost of ,005, will supplement Hialeahs model fire-control system. Fire plugs are located at every second barn and every stable is equipped with four extinguishers. The automatic hot water system makes unnecessary the use of fires in the stable area for heating water for washing horses. The track has its own water pumping plant with capacity of 1,200 gallons a minute, and the infield lake is available for pumping water in emergencies. The engine, constructed on a 1945 Chevrolet chassis, has 1,300 feet of hose, extension ladders, rope hoists, etc. Joe Morrow, superintendent of grounds, is in charge of Hialeahs fire control.
