I., N. Y., May 25. — Mrs. Walter J. Jeffords Mahout scored a stunning upset in the seventh running of the 0,000 Peter Pan Handicap, feature event at Belmont Park this afternoon, closing with a rush in the stretch to beat Maine Chance Farms Lord Boswell by two lengths going away. A neck back of the odds-on choice came Lester Manor Stables Manor Lad, while Mrs. Aksel Wichfelds Cable finished a half length farther back in the field of 14 three-year-olds disputing the mile and a furlong. Ignored in the wagering despite having won his last two starts, one last fall and the other this spring, but both at Pim-lico. Mahout paid 7.80. Johnny Longden steered him home in the fair time of 1:50%. The final time had to be on the slow side after fractions of :22%, :45%, 1:10%, and a mile in 1:37%. Despite the absence of rail transportation, a crowd of 37,740 checked through the turnstiles in ideal racing weather. They wagered with enthusiasm, investing 69,-309 on the Peter ean alone and topping last Saturdays figures by a substantial margin. Hypnotic Assumes Command The start of the Peter Pan was excellent, but the big field charged out of the gate in a mad scramble and it was a quarter of a mile before the pattern of the race began to take shape. At that stage Belairs filly Hypnotic, who won the Oaks last week, surged to the front and opened up a lead over Perfect Bahram, Cedar Creek, Master Bid, Alamond and Mahout, who were closely grouped, while Lord Boswell was far back and appearing to refuse to extend himself. As the field rounded the far turn, Hypnotic led by three lengths over Perfect Bahram, who was beginning to shorten stride, while Mahout had moved into third place, and Manor Lad was also making a strong bid while Phidias was briefly in contention and Master Bid dropped back. Hypnotic continued to lead into the stretch, with Manor Lad charging up strongly and taking the lead for an instant in the middle of the home lane. At the same time, Lord Boswell finally decided to run, and swept through horses, picking up one by one as he drove down the middle of the track. Mahout, who had followed Manor Lad in his bid for the lead, put that horse away inside the sixteenth pole, and moved away with authority, while Lord Boswell just got up to take the place in the final strides. Lord Boswell, who had finished fourth in the Derby, and second in the Preakness, was not disgraced under his 128 pounds, conceding 15 to the winner, who carried a pound extra, but did not appear to race kindly until much too late. William Helis speedy Greek Warrior scored a popular victory in the Captain Hook Handicap that preceded the Peter Pan, staggering to the end of six furlongs three-quarters of a length before Harry Lamontagnes fast-closing Larky Day who led Mrs. Louis Rabinowitz Reply paid by three lengths.
