Charles T. Fishers crack colt, Star Reward, a homebred son of Reaping Reward and Far Star, carried the Dixiana colors to an impressive victory here today in the Rushaway Purse, qualifying smartly for his fourthcoming engagement in the 5,000 Peabody Memorial Handicap. Much the best of his four three-year-old rivals, Star Reward, ridden by Steve Brooks, overcame a very poor Start and sped to the finish of the one mile and one-sixteenth head-liner a length and one-quarter in advance of Frederick W. Hoopers Kays Love, second by a nose before Sandy Strand Stables Shadow Shot. Murlogg Farms Balheim and J. H. Miles High Kick, the only other starters, followed the placed trio to the wire in that order. Coming off his good effort in the 1947 renewal of the Kentucky Derby, Star Reward shouldered top weight of 118 pounds in the Rushaway and completed his trip over the heavy track in 1:51. One of the shortest-priced winners of the current Lincoln Fields meeting, the Dixiana colt was held at 2 to 5 in the "tote." Star Reward was last to leave the gate when the start was effected, and jockey Brooks, wisely, permitted the ultimate victor to move along steadily in the middle of the track, while Kays Love and Shadow Shot engaged each other for the lead. Entering the stretch, Shadow Shot forged to the front and Kays Love was a length on Star Reward as the latter began his victorious bid. Holds Alvantage Easily Responding readily when shaken up, Star Reward closed determinedly and, after he had worn down Shadow Shot and Kays Love in order, he easily held his advantage, winning with something left. A real duel developed for the place award, with Kays Love finishing stoutly enough to take that portion of the purse by a nose from Shadow Shot. Balheim was a soundly beaten fourth, while High Kick, hopelessly whipped, was eased during the last eighth mile. Clear but chilly weather prevailed in the Chicago area today and a crowd of 11,947 patrons turned out for the sport, which was decided over a heavy track. Herbert M. Woolf s Woolford Farm silks were carried to a double when Enchanting accounted for the Princess Doreen Purse and Amphibious defeated seven other platers in the fourth race. Trainer Leonard J. Wilson saddled the Woolford starters and jockey Billy Floyd rode the victors A fall came about in the initial offering, a six and one-half furlongs race engaging 10 ordinary platers, D. C. Wilhelms Miss Texas going down near the furlong pole while she was racing in second position. Jockey Bobby Campbell of Fort Wayne, Ind., had the mount on Miss Texas and, after a preliminary examination at the hospital, the veteran rider was sent to Norwegian-American Hospital by the attending physician, Dr. William A. McCor-mick. A late report from the infirmary stated that Campbell was not seriously injured. James Emerys favored Topic, handled by Raphael Sanabria, was the victor in the dash, while Susan E. ran second and River Jack finished third. Topic completed his task on the heavy strip in 1:24, and paid .60 straight.
