: Belmont Stakes Field Taking Shape H. W. FISHER Saddled Dolomite for the Iatters winning performance in yesterdays opening event at Suffolk Downs. Faultless to Meet Phalanx Over Route Tailspin, Brabancon, Contest And Bullet Proof Also to Go In 00000 Week-End Test BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y.f May 26 The field for Saturdays 00,000 Belmont Stakes, least publicized, but possibly most important, of the "Triple Crown" events, which is preceded by the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, is gradually taking shape. While the field for the mile and a half classic from which geldings are barred seems likely to be on the small side, it will not lack for quality. Calumet Farms Faultless, winner of the Preakness and Withers, after finishing third to Jet Pilot and Phalanx in the Derby, is expected to again oppose the latter, with Doug Dodson in the saddle. Phalanx, who was favored in the Derby, Preakness and Peter Pan Handicap in his last three starts and failed to get up in time, though finishing well, will try once more and the added distance of the Belmont may favor the son of Pilate Jacola. He will also have a running-mate in Khy-ber Pass, winner of the final race on Saturdays- program. This fellow has always had speed and a degree of stamina, but gave the impression of being something of an equine "problem child." He is being entered in the hope that his race Saturday finally demonstrated that he has learned to run, and that he will be able to cut out a stiff pace that will bring the early pacemakers back to Phalanx in the stretch. Trainer Tom Smith said that Mains Chance Farms Jet Pilot, the Kentucky Derby winner, was definitely out of the Belmont, and would be on the sidelines for at least a few weeks. The stables juvenile star, Royal Blood, is an intended starter for Saturdays National Stallion, however, Greentree Stables Tailspin, surprise winner of the Peter Pan, is also going post-ward in the Belmont, in place of Blue Border. This son of Blenheim n. Tangled was drawing away at the end of the Peter Pan, but was receiving eight pounds from Walter P. Chryslers Brabancon, another Belmont probable, and no less than 27 from Phalanx. They will meet at equal weights on the week-end. Superior Physical Ability Another probable Belmont starter is King Ranchs big, ungainly Contest, who will have blinkers added to his equipment. This fellow is somewhat like Khyber Pass, in that his physical ability seems vastly superior to his IQ, and .it is thought that the hood may help. Other Belmont possibilities include Mrs. M. E. Whitneys Bullet Proof, who arrived from Maryland this morning; Belair Studs Hyblaze, who failed badly in the Peter Pan when sent out with the early pace, which is not his style; Mrs. Robert L. Gerrys Young Peter, who finished just a head back of Phalanx in that race after .having poor racing luck at a crucial moment; W. Goadby Loews Leander, a fast-finishing second behind Khyber Pass on Saturday, and- Marlet Stables Royal Lover. The latter, making the second start of his career and first this season, finished second to Deering Howes Donor in Saturdays -Yankee Handicap at Suffolk Downs. Tomorrows Belmont program is rather lusterless, with the ,500 Ballot Handicap at six furlongs serving as the feature. This dash has attracted a field of five, two of whom represent Greentree Stable. This is composed of the disappointing Blue Border, one of last years leading juveniles, and" Gestapo, who won the Flash Stakes and an overnight race last year, but will be making his 1947 debut. Blue Border is top-weight with 123 pounds, while Gestapo gets in with 109.- j ;
