Mount Marcy Vulcans Forge Bovard in Field for Survivor Trio of Preakness Hopefuls And Five Other Sophomores Seek Pimlico Route Stake StakePIMLJCO PIMLJCO Baltimore Md May 8 With the second and final week of racing at the Maryland Jockey Club course to be cli ¬ maxed by the seventysecond running of the historic Preakness Stakes it is only fitting that Monday should also see the threeyearolds featured in the 7500 Survivor Stakes StakesThe The Survivor which will be having its eleventh running is a jaunt of a mile and onesixteenth and has attracted eight sophomores including three prospective Preakness starters The possibilities for the 100000 fixture are Cornelius V Whit ¬ neys pair of Mount Marcy and Vulcans Forge and Sylvester W Labrot Jrs Bo ¬ vard Others named overnight for Mon ¬ days feature are Calumet Farms Whirl Blast Mrs J V Stewarts Dr Almac Alan T Clarkes Fritz Maisel H L Straus Gal ¬ lant Jake and Mrs Van Lear Blacks Gold ¬ en Reigh ReighThe The Whitney tandem would seem to have a clear edge in the Survivor with Mount Marcy apparently the more pro ¬ ficient of the two Mount Marcy has raced only three times this season and has two wins to his credit His only defeat came at the hands of Ben Whitakers My Re ¬ quest in the Wood Memorial at Jamaica JamaicaVulcans Vulcans Forge has the benefit of a race over the local track He was beaten by Oriole at six furlongs but evidently the best in the field The Whitney colt went in the air at the break circled the entire field then was still going on to win had he not ducked in nearing the finish forcing Johnny Gilbert to stand up to straighten out his mount Gilbert again will be in the saddle tomorrow while Shelby Clark first string rider for Whitney is slated to handle Mount Marcy MarcyWinner Winner of Louisiana Derby DerbyBovard Bovard winner of the Louisiana Derby the past winter in New Orleans has been unsuccessful three times in Maryland this spring but has raced well on each occa ¬ sion He was fourth to Saggy in the Chesa ¬ peake Trial second to Citation in the Chesapeake and second to Piet in the Ral Parr His best race in the Chesapeake was at a distance of ground which would indicate that lie will be a keen threat in the Survivor Willie Saunders his regular rider again will handle the saddle chores choresLike Like Bovard Dr Almac has raced excep ¬ tionally well this spring but has failed to earn a purse Dr Almac has been three times third in as many outings finishing in that position in the Trial Chesapeake and Ral Parr Fritz Maisel is another nonwin ¬ ner this season but has shown fair form and is credited with excellent morning moves Gallant Jake is likely to improve off his seasonal debut but seems over ¬ matched while Golden Reigh is clearly over his head headImprovement Improvement can be expected from Cal ¬ umets Whirl Blast who will carry Warren Wrights silks while Citation and Coaltown are awaiting the more important as well as more lucrative Preakness Whirl Blast after winning an overnight sprint race at Havre was an also ran in the Ral Parr here While beaten at bit more than three lengths Whirl Blast showed a desire to run but was extremely rank and repeatedly ran into trouble If Hedley Woodhouse is for ¬ tunate enough to get clear sailing with the Whirlaway colt he may upset the Survivor field
