Gallant Fox Handicap to Engage Many Stars at Jamaica Track on Saturday Remsen Features MidWeek Program Ten Fillies Vie in Todays Maud Muller Purse PurseJAMAICA JAMAICA L L N Y May 8 The Metropolitan Jockey Club brings its lengthy session to a close next Saturday with the presentation of the first of the major handicaps that highlight the New York racing scene The 75000 Gallant Fox Handicap which had its first seven run ¬ nings in the fall and at a mile and five fur ¬ longs is now a spring event and at a mile and threesixteenths owing to the revised schedule of dates this year which has the entire Jamaica meeting staged in April and May rather than split into spring and fall sesions as in previous years The following Monday the scene shifts to Belmont Park where the thoroughbreds perform through June 16 followed by a month at Aqueduct two weeks of Saratogaat Jamaica a month of SaratogaatSaratoga before fall racing takes place on Long Island IslandMost Most of the leading Gallant Fox candi ¬ dates are racing in Maryland or New Jer ¬ sey today Mrs Ethel D Jacobs Stymie Ridgewood Stables Double Jay Calumet Farms Fervent and Faultless William Helis Elpis BayardSharps Tide Rips and Joe Tuccis Incline are all engaged in the Dixie which will be run at the same dis ¬ tance at Pimlico today and that race may eliminate a few of the candidates candidatesJorge Jorge de Atuchas Endeavour II Maine Chance Farms Knockdown C V Whit ¬ neys Bright Sword and Mrs Ester duPont Weirs Royal Governor are engaged in the Valley Forge Handicap at Garden State Park ParkThe The leading feminine candidates for the Gallant Fox W L Branns Gallorette King Ranchs But Why Not Arnold Hangers Harmonica and G H Pete Bostwicks Risolater all met in the Firenze Handicap at Jamaica today The charts of those races can prove a better line on the Gallant Fox than could possibly be provided here but the race does shape up as a humdinger fully justifying the 75000 in added money offered by John A Morris and his asso ¬ ciates in the Metropolitan Jockey Club ClubAnother Another transposed stake will be pre ¬ sented on Wednesday This is the 15000 Remsen which for the past two seasons has been in the fall at a mile and a six ¬ teenth and from 1918 through 1945 was at sixfurlongs while from i904 through 1909 it was at five and a half furlongs The race was not held between 1909 and 1918 The Remsen has now been reduced in distance to five furlongs and naturally loses much of its significance Among the recent win ¬ ners who went on to prove betterthan average racers are Johnstown Apache Blue Swords Lord Boswell and Phalanx PhalanxNo No less than 159 juveniles are eligible to this years Remsen and many of them have not yet faced the starter The best known of the eligibles are Mrs Ada L Rices Ad ¬ miral Lea Fred W Hoopers Ocean Drive E P Taylors Transfluent William Helis Ennobled H Akerbergs Blue Counsellor and Brookmeade Stables Gnu GnuMondays Mondays feature is the 6000 Maud Muller Purse an allowance test at a mile and a sixteenth for threeyearold fillies This event which is named for Harry Payne Whitneys good race and broodmare has attracted a wellmatched field of nine including several with stakes pretentions Miss Request Whats New Alablue Com ¬ pliance Scattered and the Belair Stud entry of My Emma and Vashti all can run a little littleThe The Antrim Purse that precedes the Maud Muller as the fourth race in a six furlongs sprint also under allowance con ¬ ditions that has lured a field of 14 Isadore Biebers Greek Hero winner of his last five starts here is in this dash along with such capable speedsters as Degage Glad Time Pompeian Master Mind Heliotrope and Nightlife This should be a wild scramble from flagfall to finish
