REFLECTIONS BY NELSON DUNSTAN NEW YORK N Y May 8 The unfortunate case of Earl Sande was certain to bring the spotlight on thorT oughbred racing but a few of us were prepared for the statement issued by Harry J Anslinger Federal Narcotics Commissioner who stated The ar art t of the celebrated former jockey Earl Sande capped a multitude of reports to the Nar ¬ cotics Bureau from all parts of the country that doping of horses is on the increase Were stepping right into the picture unless there are clever and immediate indications that the Sande case has served as a warning The num ¬ ber of recent complaints from honest horse owners in ¬ dicates that enforcement is again lax in every section of the country that has an important race course That statement left racing people flabbergasted for even long before the formation of the Association of Official Rac ¬ ing Chemists it was a known fact that doping on the race courses was very much on the decrease Many of the people we have talked with and some of them rac ¬ ing chemists object to the Anslinger statement as one which does not give detail but is simply a general state ¬ ment that is more of a scarehead than a document which could be used for further investigationA investigation A A A AThere There is no doubt that the Association of Official Rac ¬ ing Chemists through Dr Charles E Morgair will answer the Anslinger statement But Ashley T Cole chairman of the New York State Racing Commission said that he read the statement in astonishment and went on to say If this is true why did not Mr Anslinger turn the facts over to the men who would do the investigating Here in New York we are engaged day and night in seeking out offenders who dope horses We regret the Sande incident but there is no man too big for investigation We inspect two or three horses in every race through the saliva test and the winner is further given a urine test The Sande case is the first positive that we have come across this year and I have implicit faith in our chemists Mr An ¬ slinger would be doing racing a great favor if he would give the details and not deal in generalities We have Sande Case Draws Anslinger s Warning Turf People Astonished by His Statement Helis Homebreds Encourage Jersey Breeder Coalt owns Starting in Preakness Hailed Hailedfurnished furnished Mr Anslinger and his two New York agents with credentials which make them members of the staff of the New York State Racing Commission These men can attend any track any time they see fit and I simply fail to understand why Mr Anslinger would make such a statement without turning over to the proper people the complaints which he says he has from honest horse owners in every part of the country A A A AWhen When Our Fleet won the Frizette Stakes from Gay Mood and Be Sure last Wednesday she once again cen ¬ tered attraction on her sire Count Fleet whose first crop brought prices that were sensational last year To date just four of Count Fleets youngsters have gone to the races and three of them have been winners Our Fleet was his first stake winner and the manner in which she won the Frizette gives promise for the other babes who were in his first crop In the Remsen which is to be run at Jamaica on Wednesday William Helis has entered his colt by Count Fleet Galagay who cost 25000 The name of this colt is Ennobled and he was a convincing winner at the Jamaica meeting Helis incidentally is having much satisfaction in seeing some of his homebreds win for youngsters by Rounders and Valdina Orphan have come through to break their maidens at an early date At Garden State last Tuesday Floria a bay filly by Valdina Orphan was a winner over 10 rivals and on the same day Emulate a chestnut colt by Rounders was a Jamaica winner over 11 competitors The youngsters by Rounders have created quite an impression with horse ¬ men in the East EastA A A A AMarylanders Marylanders hailed the surprise decision of Warren Wright and Ben Jones to send Coaltown to the post along with Citation in next Saturdays running of the Preakness at Pimlico There is no getting away from the fact that Coaltown has caught the fancy of the American racing public and that has not been dimmed by his de ¬ feat at Churchill Downs It was very surprising to us after the running of the Derby to hear so many people say I wonder what would have happened had this race been run over a fast track Returning to New York Ed ¬ die Arcaro told us in no uncertain terms of his admira ¬ tion of Coaltown although the great little rider is still of the opinion that Citation will prove his master regardless of the going on the day they meet This is one case where although the Calumet pair have all the best of it that the Preakness will not suffer as a result of the Derby running With Coaltown in the lineup it now appears as if a sizable field will run for the blackeyed susans and even though the Calumet pair may again Tun onetwo it shapes up as an interesting Preakness renewal This will prove especially true if the track is fast for many people are of the opinion that Coaltowns terrific speed is not at its best over a sloppy track trackA A A A AEven Even though racing has been slow to get under way the throngs have held up exceptionally well The Pimlico meeting will come to an end next Saturday along with the long Jamaica meeting in New York On May 17 Bel mont Park will open and on the 29th Delaware Park will swing into action for a 30day meeting Many of the finest horses now campaigning in the East will be seen during the running of these meetings Steeplechasing will be a feature at both of these meetings but the flat races will also draw some of the best horses to be found in this country At the moment Stymie is being watched closely as he is one of the biggest idols the turf has had in many years There is hardly a doubt that he will be named for the Metropolitan Handicap and also the Suburban Handi ¬ cap the latter race carrying 50000 in added money will be run at one and onequarter miles on May 31 Sty ¬ mie has also been named for the 25000 Sussex Handi ¬ cap which will be run at Delaware on July 3 While it is true that the worlds money winning champion is a bad shipper there is a good possibility he will appear in this race which has also drawn the entries of Talon Gal lorette Rico Monte But Why Not Endeavour IL and other name horses
