JOCKEY ALBERT BODIOU Popular rider over midwest tracks is dead at 32 Jockey Albert Bodiou Dies by His Own Hand HandAdvance Advance III Health as Cause of Suicide Was Astride 635 Winners WinnersCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 8 Jockey Albert Bodiou 32yearold Winnipeg Canadaborn rider was found dead of a pistol shot wound late yesterday at his Louisville apartment 4508 South Seventh Street Joseph Beck deputy cpro oner of Jefferson County gave a verdict of suicide after he investigated the case and had learned from Bodious friends that the deceased jockey had been despondent and in ill health for the past two or three months monthsBodious Bodious body was found by firemen who entered the riders living quarters through a transom after Mrs Ida Ruth landlady at the Bodiou apartment could not arouse the jockey when Bodious wife telephoned from Washington The dead saddlesmith had been in the habit of telephoning Mrs Bodiou daily Mrs Ruth said saidMrs Mrs Bodiou and her two children had been visiting relatives in Washington for several days Mrs Ruth told Coroner Beck The rider came here from Keeneland and had accepted but few mounts during the current Churchill Downs meeting meetingBodiou Bodiou had been a jockey for 14 years and rode Bob Murphy in the 1946 Ken ¬ tucky Derby and finished seventh with his mount He also had ridden for the J E Widener stable and in recent years for the establishment conditioned by Howard Wells His last regular assignment was with the William Crumptrained public stable Bodious father F Bodiou pres ¬ ently lives in Saskatchewan Canada CanadaIt It was at Whittier Park on September 11 1935 that Bodiou rode his first winner Pekisko for the Whittier Park Stock Farm Since then he has ridden 635 winners 607 seconds and 547 thirds out of 4598 mounts Horses he rode garnered 1140164 in purse monies moniesThe The former rider rode with much suc ¬ cess on the Illinois and Kentucky circuits and he was the regular pilot for the one ¬ time stakes horse Equifox who won sev ¬ eral major engagements during his racing career Included in the list of stakes Bo ¬ diou won astride Equinox were the Equi ¬ poise Mile at Arlington Park the Wash ¬ ington Park Handicap and the Churchill Downs Handicap HandicapFuneral Funeral arrangements have not been completed
