BETWEEN RACES By OSCAR OTIS GARDEN STATE PARK Camden N J May 8 Fans have been some ¬ what bewildered by the Earl Sande case and it is understandable On the surface everything did not seem to add up Sande is facing a charge of possessing narcotics before a U S Commissioner in Brooklyn and the Jockey Club stewards have suspended him for 60 days The TRPB which aided in the investigation of the case refuses to comment at this time because Sande is facing a charge which has not as yet been proven or disproven in federal court Our guess is that Sande was somewhat the victim of circumstances In an event it is understood there is doubt of intent The stewards suspended him as a trainer and owner Assuming that Sande keeps his horses this suspension as an owner would in effect be a fine for the horses are unable to run under his silks and their expenses continue daily If Sande is found guilty in the federal courts the Jockey Club could take further action If he is found not guilty and as these lines are written the grand jury has not indicted him then at the end of the 60 days he could return to the turf His suspension will be up He will have been disciplined for what may have been just carelessness There is a lot of difference between evil intent and carelessness But both often have unfortunate consequences The amount of interest in the Sande case has been little shoftr of amazing Sande has not been in the national eye for a long time ever since in fact Stagehand was doing so soswell swell True he has been racing a stable of horses but in the main people away from New York had quite lost track of him The immediate reaction after the an ¬ nouncement of his arraignment before a United States Commissioner was one of absolute disbelief Those who know Sande personally from the old days when he was riding can not reconcile his character with the charges Background of Sande Case Is Explained Florida Takes an Edge Over California Mount Marcy at Peak for the Preakness Debut of C V Vhitney Juveniles Delayed Delayedagainst against him He did a bit of rough riding maybe but always in an endeavor to win winA A A A AEverett Everett Clay who can say Hialeah Park quicker than somewhat has renewed an old FloridaCalifornia feud by citing the fact that Citation and Coaltown both wintered in Florida and then goes on to remark that Citation is the fifth Hialeahtrained colt to win the Ken ¬ tucky Derby in the last eight years After the Derby race was over brother Clay interviewed Ben Jones along with a host of newspapermen but while practically all hands were asking for other information Clay obtained the ex ¬ citing news that Jones thought Hialeah Park the ideal place to get a horse ready for the Derby in fact all four of the famed Jones winners were Floridatrained in ¬ cluding Lawrin Whirlaway and Pensive Last year Fault ¬ less made a grand college try but the best he could do was third albeit a game one to Jet Pilot and Phalanx Clay of course did not mention California by name but the inference was there alright and the best the Cal ¬ ifornia people could answer was that two who wintered west of the Rockies Jet Pilot and the long shot Galla hadion were with the sunshine during the winter at San ¬ ta Anita In any event wintertrained horses from both East and West have done alright in recent Derby run ¬ nings falling just short of a monopoly and also have made brave attempts in showings in the Preakness and Belmont Stakes as well wellA A A A AThose Those who predicted that the Preakness would de ¬ velop into a walkover were a bit premature it appears Owners and trainers of several flossy threeyearolds at the moment seem quite willing to try the Calumet horses Citation and or Coaltown at the mile and three sixteenths distance of Marylands most famous race Trainer Syl Veitch of the C V Whitney string is among the growing number of trainers who refuse to be fright ¬ ened by the fabled exploits of the Calumet team and bar ¬ ring mishaps Mount Marcy and possibly Vulcans Forge will be at the post at Old Hilltop next Saturday Veitch reveals that Mount Marcy has quite a few factors in his favor and although he will not hazard a guess as to whether Mount Marcy actually will upset Citation or Coaltown or both he is quite confident that his colt will turn in a creditable effort For one thing Mount Marcy is coming up to the Preakness a fresh horse and a fit one He has trained entirely to satisfaction Mount Marcy had a long winter rest in Kentucky He luckily escaped a cough which upset the planned routine of the twoyearold division and which will delay their racing debuts for some time timeA A A A AIn In the main the C V Whitney juveniles will not be unveiled until perhaps along during Saratoga time In ¬ cidentally Veitch will let time determine the better of his two threeyearold prospects at the moment Mount Marcy or Vulcans Forge They are two entirely dif ¬ ferent ypes of horses and hard to classify against each other at this time explained Veitch But one of the two undoubtedly is the best in the barn Incidentally the next objective in New York of the mighty phalanx is the Gallant Fox From then on the topranking threeyear old will have a steady campaign of distance races in pros ¬ pect which conceivably could make him a new and potent factor among the highweight division of American horses and giving new competition to fellows such as Stymie Armed and Talon
