Hope for Eight-Horse Field in Bunker Hill Rockingham Invitational Event May See Matagorda Going to Post SALEM, N. H., June 7. Lou Smith, executive director of Rockingham Park, today announced that the, 0,000-added Bunker Hill Invitational Mile which is to be run here on June 17 will be for the older handicap stars, and that invitations will be issued to several thoroughbreds now running at Belmont Park. Soldier Son, Larry Ellis, News Again, Park Dandy and thoroughbreds of that calibre will be issued invitations to the Bunker Hill Mile, and in addition three or four thoroughbreds from New York will be invited in the hopes of attracting an eight-horse field. One most likely to make his debut here is Joe W. Browns Matagorda, victor in the Louisiana Derby last year as a three-year-old and winner of the Ballot Handicap at Belmont on Friday. Smith is particularly eager to get an acceptance from Brown, for his contract rider is Dick McLaughlin of Haverhill. Not much was made of it at Derby time hereabouts, for the papers were full of Tony DeSpirito and his Derby debut, but McLaughlin also rode in both the Derby and the Preakness. He has been enjoying considerable success, and his return to the Rock to ride Matagorda would be welcome news in the Merrimack Valley, particularly since he would find himself once again riding against DeSpirito. Smiths offer of 0,000 for the Bunker Hill Day Mile is an expression of confidence in the future of the meeting, which got away to a faltering start last week, but is expected to return to normalcy this week and reach an all-time high in July. x. , 1 xtu , J t iil i L. l i 4- t, i.
