4 Determine on Edge For 00,000 Race Derby Winner Won Debonair With Ease; Totes 115 Pounds In Californian on Week End HOLLYWOOD, PARK, Inglewood, Calif., June 7. Having whipped the best three-year-olds on both sides of the Rockies, Andy Crevolins Kentucky Derby winner Determine is going to be sent after older horses in Hollywoods newest stake, the 00,000 Californian at a mile and one-sixteenth on Saturday. The son of Alibhai, who last Saturday racked up his eighth stakes victory of the year in capturing the Debonair, will be spotting weight on the scale to all of his Californian rivals including his own stablemate Imbros, who is to shoulder tops of 118, but most of those who have followed Determines 1954 progress believe he has Saturdays stake at his mercy, t Hollywood patrons were a little timid supporting Determine in last Saturdays Debonair, since he was backing up to seven furlongs after having traveled a mile and a quarter in the Kentucky Derby, and he went off at odds of 13 to 10. But he was a running horse, as he has been in all his races this year, and he won pretty much as his rider, Ray York, pleased. He picked up 126 pounds and covered the seven panels in 1:22 which only a few years ago was worlds record time for the distance. Takes Lead in Stretch Such speedy three-year-olds as Lucky Martin, Rolyat, The Pie King and Fault Free beat Determine to the first quarter, and Lucky Martin and Rolyat were slightly in front of him on the stretch turn, but then the little Crevolin star shifted into Lhigh. He took the lead soon after entering Ithe final straightaway and in the last eighth pulled out to win with three lengths to rspare. Near the end York took a hold on his mount or else he probably would have improved on his final time. Discussing the decision to start Determine against older horses in the California Crevolin said that it would be a long time before the colt would get another opportunity to run for a 00,000 purse with as little as 115 pounds on his back. It may be a long time too before his stablemate Imbros gets to race under so light a weight as 118 pounds. In three starts this meeting Imbros has shouldered 132 pounds, 130 and 126, and though he did. not win any of them he was beaten less than a length in each. Some of the horses scheduled to challenge I Determine and Imbros in the Californian are Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Goemans Curragh I King, the Owl Stables Golden Abbey and Mr. and Mrs. N. G. Phillips Stranglehold, all of them stakes winners this meeting: Curragh King won the Argonaut, Golden Abbey the Golden State and Stranglehold j the Premiere. Others listed as certain starters are Calumet Farms Fleet Bird, Mrs. Gordon Guiber-sons Correspondent, King Ranchs High Scud, King and Browns Goose Khal and the Helbush Farms Nearque H.
