I., May 3.— U.P.— The Rhode Island Boxing Commission began an inquiry tonight in the case of Jose Contreras, 28, of Taunton, Mass., who suffered a near-fatal brain hemorrhage in the ring. The commission sought to determine why referee Sharkey Buonanno allowed middleweight Bob Bolton of Providence to belabor Contreras with punches to the head for most of three rounds before stopping the fight. He remained unconscious following a. four-hour operation to remove a blood clot near his right temple. Contreras was floored with a smashing right high on his head in the fourth round. He came back strong in the fifth, but then appeared to be totally unable to defend himself until two minutes and 40 seconds of the eighth when Buonanno awarded Bolton and*tSeeliiical knockout * * * * * *f
