Souchak Leads Golfs Money Winners; Middlecoff Second Young Mike Souchak leads the "play-for-pay" golfers in money winnings with Dr. Cary Middlecoff a close second, the Professional Golfers Association has revealed. Souchak, of Durham, N. C, has collected 4,648 along the tournament trail so far this season. Middlecoff is right behind him with 4,063. Gene Littler is third with 3,252, Billy Maxwell fourth with 1,746, and Ted Kroll fifth with 1,408. Slammin Sammy Snead still leads the Vardon Trophy race with 833 strokes over 12 rounds for a 69.41 average. Chandler Harper jumped into contention, however, with 1,809 strokes for 26 rounds, or a 69.57 average. Kroll is third with a 69.84 mark, Middlecoff fourth with 70.04, and Jay He-bert fifth with 70.22. Middlecoff still is the leader in the Ryder Cup battle, with 619 31/60 points. Tommy Bolt retains second with 513%. The top five is rounded out by Kroll with 446 5/12, Jerry Barber with 437 29/30, and Bob Toski with 436 5/12. The PGA also announced two events which will complete the summer tour. The inaugural of the Mineola-Garden City Rotary Open Invitational will be held at a club to be announced later in Minecla, N. Y., Sept. 29-Oct. 2. The Eastern Open Invitational will be held Oct. 6 at Mount Pleasant Golf Course, Baltimore.
